Maverick youth 20 gauge

I just bought my son a Maverick youth 20 gauge, I took it out back to test fire it and found out that I can't load any rounds in the magazine, I removed the plug and noticed that it's a standard plug, witch doesn't allow the loading of any rounds. Now the question is, how much of the plug should I cut off, so he can at least load the 3 legal rounds.

Congrats on the new Mossy. Is he going to use it for hunting? If so you can measure what 3 1/2 of the shells are he'll be using and cut.
If it's not going to be used for hunting take the dowel out and put in in the gun box.
