.223 MVP

CaddmannQ

.50 BMG
So, who is shooting the .223 MVP, and how does it rate as a target gun?

I'm really not liking my AR15 all that much. I guess for CQB it's hard to beat, but 99% of the time I'm a benchrest shooter, and this gun is just not made for that.

Anyhow, I was thinking I wanted a .308 Win target gun, but as much as I don't like the AR, I really like the .223/5.56 cartridge.

So I'm considering my next purchase is going to be a .223 bolt gun with bench rest type stock and a long heavy barrel.

Mossberg makes one that's priced right, and I like the looks, but I have never shot it. Other people are telling me that a Tika or Howa would be better, but I've never shot one of either, so I don't have a lot to go on.

I might have already ordered an MVP Long Range from Davidson's, but they didn't have the exact model I liked in stock today.

18.5" medium bull barrel. Trigger is ok and breaks fine. Just wish it was a tad bit lighter. Normal plinking .223 FMJ shoots around 1.5-2 MOA.

50-55gr Vmax gets it to MOA or below

62gr Corbon TSX is MOA or below

Black Hills 68gr sierra bt wasn't grouping well in my gun at all

Video of the MVP in action:

I love shooting .223 and if Water Monkey hadn't already posted his, he would have been my go to on this.

Even that carbine bull barrel shoots very well. It accepts AR magazines which you've already got and it shoots both the .223 and 5.56. My savage is chambered .223 only and doesn't use an external magazine.

Here we have a MVP LC shooting 5.56 NATO at 340 yards, at what looks like about 3 inch rocks, give or take.
If this does not impress you I don't know what to say then.

That's awesome. Farthest out here is 200 yards to shoot. I was ringing in a 4" gong in prone all day long

We can shoot to 300 yds, but no farther, without joining the high power club at the range. I just have the basic membership, but the hi-power guys shoot out to 300, 600 & 800 yds. All prone shooting only there.

This is the firing line at the 0-300 yd members range.

It was not a busy afternoon that day. On a saturday it fills up by 9AM.

Does that make for a more rigid and accurate gun?

I have only shot one long gun of such design & that was a rock from WW-1.

Nope, just means it's a blind/top load only magazine.

If the action were bedded it would be more rigid. I could get another stock, like a Hogue that's pillar bedded, but I'm shooting at most 1.5 MOA and if I'm trying I can get tighter than that. That's as good as I care about. If/when I put a bipod on it, if the stock begins contacting the barrel, I may change my mind. As it is, I rest it on my back pack which has been working well enough.

I have the bench type (Varmint) MVP. (I found some targets: attached.) I have not shot it much beyond the 50 yard sight in but so far I love the accuracy. I load for it and shoot factory loads...55 gr Hornady, 55 gr XTreme FMJ, and Winchester White Box 55 gr FMJ. It does not matter. The rifle eats em up.

I really enjoy my 5.56 mvp patrol. Recently put a cheap bipod on it too supplement the $65 dollar scope, and at 100 yards, the rounds go where I aim, shooting 30 cent rounds from Freedom Munitions. No pix, but my last shot of the season was dead center on a shrunken head. Could have shot more but that ended my season with a smile. Hopefully joining a club with a 400 yard range, and I'll be picking up the varmint or lr model for that, already bought the 4-16X 50 scope for it. Bolt felt sloppy at first, but now I love it.

I have the 24" med bull barrel on mine .I can consistently get 4 shots in less than a nickel at 100 yds.I still have some eye relief adjustment needed on the scope which is why I have not shot at 200 yds yet.I am more than impressed with this rifle. And my groups are factory ammo.Don't even know if I will waste my time reloading for it since it shoots so well.I have even split a penny edgewise on the 1st shot with this rifle @ 100 yds.
