Simple question needing simple answer.

I cannot see some of the pictures that should appear on forum posts, some have a square box with an x in it and (img) by the side, and some have a large box with "picture not avail" in it.

Can I not see these because I am still new or it there another reason, like deleted or something. ?

The pic was never placed here. Only a link to somewhere else.

If the pic is moved there, it vanishes here. If someone changes it there, it changes here too.

That's one reason that "hot linking" is a bad idea. Also it is technically the theft of another site's bandwidth. They have to serve us, but get no site action in return. (They don't get credited with "hits".)

@bofor, do you have a particular page you were looking at?

Yep, if you have something in particular there's a chance someone here can find it for you. I know many of my old photos don't exist here anymore but in most cases I can still find them to some extent, I bet that's the case with most of the folks who have been around awhile.

also, some people have deleted the pix on their end, (photobucket, imgur, ect.) or changed the settings there to private, so some won't show. As far as I know, there was no crash or data lost.

But most likely the culprit is just what Cadmann said....

Thread moved to the correct sub forum...

Mossberg Owners Site Support

When you "hot link" someone else's picture you've lost control.
They can remove that photo, or change it, or replace it with pornography, or an ad for their website--just anything.

I have seen cases of this where the offended site owner swaps out that cute photo for some really offensive nightmare which you would NOT want your kids to see here.

This is a test for viewing a pic.

I copied a ballistic table pic for Brad in another thread, but it didn't show up properly, so I used this thread to test. Then I replaced the no-show with the Eagle box to make sure something worked.

I would just try a screen capture, if possible.

You probably tried to post an active file, rather than just an image of it.

Do you have my email? You could send a link there.

What the others have said--picture was a link to another site and the picture was moved, deleted or account changed. The "X" is the browser telling you the link is dead. The "picture not avail" may be a placeholder from the picture hosting site (ie: photobucket, etc.). Meaning the original picture is gone or hidden but the link is still functional and points to their site still. If you hover your mouse over the link you should see a URL pop up in the lower left of your screen (if using FireFox) or perhaps elsewhere with other browsers...

PS: I went to the "Firearms Photo Gallery" here at MO and found more than a few dead links that presented in FF as "[1MG]" (change the "1" to an "I")...
