New Here ... but kind of wondering, "Why?"

Jeffrey F

Copper BB
Not new to shooting ... forty five years ago, discovered I was good enough with a .22 ... shortly after that, found out a muzzle loader was stupid easy to shoot very accurately ... guess I had a knack for long rifles.

Fast forward to Spring of 2020, up here in the suburbs of Minneapolis. Have lived my whole life, never really feeling a desparate imperative for serious self defense. Watching the ... "motivated people" ... scare the police out of their own house so it could be burned down, along with a nice slice of urban businesses, sort of re-arranged my perspective.

One freind of mine showed me his built-to-the-hilt 590. Piece of Art. Niiiiiice. Another friend, leads me to an ostensibly reputable dealer up here in my own 'burb. So I drop down the ching for a 590A1, if I'm gonna do it, why not be serious, and 590 "Persuader" 20 Ga. so me and the war committee (Missus, chief procurer, whatever you want to call her) can get some practice and still have shoulders. Certainly excited, already imagining following on the 590A1 purchase with the "Retrograde" version of same.

One more jump in time, ten months plus forward to this week ... Now we have more riots up here, this time basically on the other side of the Mississippi river from our house ... but nothing to show from Mossberg.

Ahh, FINALLY, the point, the "Why?" TEN MONTHS on order, paid in advance, paid in full ? The Dealer is one listed almost at the top (okay, three down) on the Mossberg recommended dealers in my area, heck, why not the one geographically closest, and they are a well established biz with three locations in the general area. Nothing but crickets from this dealer, all along, stop in once every two months to get fed a bill of goods about "it's in the ordering chain somewhere."

Dropped a message to Mossberg yesterday. The semi-automated "we are shipping, go screw yourself" response was ... not really inspiring.

My question to a likely knowledgeable audience, of people whom I fully believe are passionate with good reason for what is discussed in a forum such as this, is "Why don't I just of give up, get my money back, I am not meant to be amongst the select?"

Those same bucks could buy me a damn nice Mare's Leg, which is Made In America ... unlike these 590's which apparently, are Not Made At All ?

Sorry, I had to do that. Cheap therapy.

(edit to correct typo.)

Welcome from MI.

I understand your frustration. While companies are shipping, there is such a backlog that it is going to take time for supply to catch up. Many dealers here wont even take orders any more.

This is a side effect of covid shutdowns, panic buying and hoarding. I wish I could say it will level out soon but will probably continue as long as riots continue and there is immenent threat of overreaching gun control.

I would keep the order and wait it out....but that is me.

MikeD, "Thank You" for the Tenor and Gravity (REALITY) of your thoughts. Patience usually has its rewards, and to say these are whakked times is an understatement.
Best Regards ... - Jeff

If you need a gun now, by all means. Get one now. Don't wait.

But the rest of the country has seen how the "peaceful protestors" and agitators and everyone else has been doing and something turned the lights on for them that their welfare is largely dependent on themselves, rather than a police force, which the supreme court has already ruled that they are not obligated to protect you (that's not sarcasm and is serious).

So, you have major shortages as we are seeing today. There is hardly anything on the shelves where I am at. Firearm or ammunition.

FWIW, while you're waiting on your shotgun, if you can find ammo for it, buy it as you see it.

Most ammunition manufacturers have stated that they have at least 1-1/2 years backlog. So, now is probably the worst time to buy a new gun or a new caliber that you don't already have a bunch of.

Months ago I said we all need to become our own first responders whether it be in response to a medical situation, a fire or escalating violence. Given today's climate I'm not sure we can nor should rely on anyone answering our call for help.

Are you prepared for an emergency?

Regards

Patience is a virtue they say. Once you get the shotguns you’ll be happy. Start looking for shells now. They are in short supply.
Good Luck!

Welcome to the forum Jeffrey F.

I would definitely not wait to start buying if you see things available. You can always trade to someone else if it’s not exactly what you need, because everything is going to become more expensive and more difficult to get as time goes on.

Jeffrey, first, welcome to the forum.

Here in Oklahoma buying the firearm is not a problem, however ammo is. Many of the local gun shops are keeping ammo back and will sell a box or two with a gun purchase.

Another good option around here are pawn shops. They often have just what you are looking for, or a good substitute. Most of them even have some ammo.

Again, welcome aboard.

Actually, we are land owners in up-state New York (Jefferson, Schoharie County, near like Cobleskill and Stamford and Oneonta, or halfway between Albany and Cooperstown) ... originally a retirement plan, sort of messed up when Cancer took out some of the friends we really wanted to retire with up there. But we still roll out from time to time and park the trailer in the middle of the forest and enjoy hard-core off-grid time. Much fallen wood is sacrificed to deliberate and architected thermal oxidation. ;) Manhattan Island used to be a neat place to visit, last time I was there was 2001 at the end of July. (Isn't that hideously self-explanatory.)

To a bunch of you - Thank You for the kind greetings and intelligent words. There is a certain "big box" retailer here (something about a warehouse for sports-men) who has been utterly polite and helpful and along the way helped locate Maverick variant of a 500. Operates smooth, easy to sight and aim, goes boom real good. ! GRIN ! Also picked up a strange affinity for .410 and 45-Colt, go figure ?
Am going to let the order ride at dealer for a while longer, but after I find a little more zen and chill, will find some week-day biz hours time to go talk with a person in realy authority there, see what the real skinny is. Sort of nickel-and-dimed some miscellaneous bird-shot purchases at Wally Land so have ability to practice when opportunity presents itself (there are open shoots from time to time near us on private and safe land) and at least a limited amount of more serious stuff that, God willing, will never be expended. But woe the zombies that come to steal our triple-ply Northern brand bath tissue !!!

Jeff F. Sounds like you are squared away for the short term. If you find yourself needing and in the 585 give me a heads up and I can fix you up.

Checking in, wanted to thank some of you for the offers to help and the kind greetings.

More important, thank you also for helping me find patience. ("I want patience NOW, dammit ..." ;) )

Got a phone call from my dealer a few days ago, one of my two orders had arrived. Went and picked it up today, a pretty new 20-Ga 590 "Security" (#50699) ... am very much looking forward to some quality practice.

Feel and balance are terrific, fit is comfortable, this one has the ghost ring rear sight with an red-orange fiber optic out front, very easy for me to sight.

Looking forward to posting a positive experience report here after putting some shells through it.
