SA 20 barrel needs threaded

Hello,
I'm new here and to mossberg shotguns and need help.
To start off I'm a retired lineman with back problems.
I owned all 12 gauges until I bought an SA-20 Tactical 2 wks. ago.
Trying to put a 20 ga. together that will take turkeys and be easier on my back.
I knew the gun came with a fixed cyl. bore, which I like but thought I'd buy another barrel for it that would accept choke tubes. WRONG! Not to be found. OK, I need to have it threaded and need someone to do it. Emailed 2 big names without much help. Aimpro replied and said that they would get back with
prices, instructions, etc. They did leave a phone number. Trulock, didn't respond and Carlsons wants to thread for their tubes only.
What would you guys do?
Thanks for your time,
jisco38

I've never had a barrel threaded ... or dealt with Aimpro, but I would just hang in there a little bit for them. They "appear" to be Mossberg specialists.

That's where I would have went ... not knowing.

Yeah Darth, I'm gonna start calling tomorrow.
Also going to get a nailing box from the PO.

They were out at the SHOT Show this past week so that might be why you weren't getting through to anyone.

Being at the show could be the reason for no responce.
Like I said, I'll start trying again tomorrow and see what happens.
Thanks and FWIW I like and appreciate this site.
Thanks for the help,

Glad to help, be sure to keep us updated! If you don't have any luck with those I have another vendor that I met at the show. I will have to look where I put his business card.

Thought I'd update my barrel status. I mailed it to Aimpro and they received it on Monday. I spoke with Mike and explained what I wanted done while he wrote up the order. Very nice guy and patient.
I'm having it threaded for tubes and having the forcing cone polished. So far I've been very pleased with their operation.
When I get the barrel back I'll update on performance.

Sorry for such a long delay, but the truth is, I have only shot two slugs through the reworked barrel. Lots of back trouble. Broke it in 1985, then ruptured two discs in 1995. These injuries have finally slowed me down considerably. I live in the country, have 5 acres and a fairly new neighbor that calls the sheriffs dept every time I shoot a weapon. Been shooting here since 1975. Got tired of this neighbor's pit bull and German shepherd running loose and squaring off on my wife and me, plus scaring my grandchildren. After them hearing and watching me run the dogs off for 15 months, I called the animal warden. That's when the deputies started answering his calls, 5 times, saw no safety problems and shook their heads. Been threatening to sue me and everything else. Can't win! Finally joined a hunting club and hope to finish testing the barrel work that I had done. Long story, but I figured I'd tell it like it is. When I finally get a chance to try the SA-20 out, I'll update everyone. Thanks for your time and patience!!! jisco38

sorry to hear about your back,,,,and your neighbors.
who finally did the barrel work?

Thanks for the replies and wishes guys. The city police and county sheriff departments have a range about a mile from my house. I know a lot of these guys, and get along well. The neighbor deal eats at me. I bought my 5 ac. in 1975 and started shooting here 2 yrs. before I built the house, in 1977. I was the second person to pick my land and build. Every once in a while, and before, deer & turkey seasons friends would come out here to sight their guns in. Several years ago the neighbor built, then about 6 yrs. ago bought the pit and shepherd. I had no problem, even though we have a county ordnance that says people are to keep their dogs confined to their property. I still didn't have a problem until they decided to hang around & crap by my deck. Then several months later they started to square off on us, barking & pawing the grass. I called the animal warden and it hit the fan. Every time I'd shoot a gun, always safely, he'd call the sheriff's dept. Supposedly concerned about a stray bullet. No way possible, but I got tired of taking the deputies time. They would usually hang around and talk. They knew what was going on, but had to respond. He stands in his driveway yelling and cussing and threatening to sue me before the law gets here, six times now! Sorry about the long post but it gives me a chance to vent, I guess. I'm not a coward, been in a few scraps, years ago, and served in the Marines, in the early 70's. Just don't want to pay an attorney, to prove what the sheriff dept. knows. Got 2 grandchildren, girl 10 & boy 11. I want to be able to leave them something, instead of an attorney. I was told when this all started that he wants me to swing first, claim a neck injury and sue. Anyway, I had Aimpro, in Colorado thread and do some work on the barrel's forcing cone. I'm gonna go see the police about getting a key to the range. The city owns it & the 1400 ac. with a lake for the cities water plant. The chief is married to my cousin, which may help. I promise to report on the results as soon as I get a chance to try it out. I have all kinds of shells & shot sizes to test with. Sorry again for such a long post, just to update you all on my status, but will follow through with a report ASAP.
Thanks,
jisco38

well first off thank you for your service!
can i ask you ,,,if you own 5ac are you allowed to fire weapons safely on your own property?
barrel work sounds nice.get a chance,post some pics. :)
i've noticed sometimes with a neighbor like that completely ignore them would do you better.
i'm an animal lover,,,,but if a dog goes for me or my wife,,,,first time a warning,,,,second time it's over.

Thank you. Yes, here in Ohio, as long as the property is outside the city limits we can shoot guns on our propety. That is as long as it's in a safe direction. Since 1975, I've always had several piles of dirt, as a backstop, with railroad ties behind the dirt mound. With about an acre+ of woods about 15 yards behind the huge dirt mound and ties. The last visit from the deputy was June 2012. He took pics, same as the deputies did the 5 times before. Anyway, the deputy said that the neighbor mentioned lead, also being a factor. I have a treated lumber frame with a piece of 1/2 inch steel plate at 45 degrees as my target holder. This keeps the lead inside the frame. About a 2 ft.X2 ft.area in front of the stand which is far from the neighbor's property is all of my property that would be contaminated. It could be easily scooped up. I ordered a 7 shot mag extension from Choate the other night. When I get it installed, I'll try taking some pics of the SA-20 for you.
Thanks for the interest and being a site devoted to Mossberg owners. Great website!!!

don't forget the pics when you get a chance.
sounds like you made a nice little pvt. range. :)

I just contacted Aimpro the other day about the same gun SA-20 tactical with 20" barrel. kind of got a runaround.
They seem to know what they are doing but they were telling me to pick a choke and send it all to them for work. I do not want to pick one that is difficult for them to thread when a different but similar unit will work better.
I notice some chokes are short some are long, some are threaded on the end (down the barrel) and some at the top (end of barrel) Which works or is better for this gun?

I'm also new at this and was looking for suggestions on choke types not so much the bore diameter, but no help. I wanted to find out what kind they feel would be the best/ easiest for them to thread for. and to be able to switch chokes between improved cylinder for trap and cylinder bore (to protect the threads from slugs).

What did you end up going with?
I was looking at the ported TruLock PHBEN20620P (bore) and the same type in improved cyl.

How did you make out?

any help appreciated

Wondering how Jisco38 made out with the SA-20 barrel threading and which chokes he went with. Just sent my SA-20 tactical to Aimpro for choke threading. there was some confusion about which chokes they would use. the SA-20 from the factory uses a Benelli type choke but Aimpro threads for Mossberg so I sent back the Benelli's and got the WIN type that a Mossberg 500 USA uses. the threading is different.
I finally spoke to Mike at Aimpro as you mentioned and got the choke type issue straightened out quickly. also some action work may be done if needed.
How did the forcing cone mods work out? Is it worth it?
Will post pics when returned.
