Mossberg 930 Autoloader Troubleshooting

Re: Loading Jams

Any update?

I have noticed that as I am inserting a shell, the elevator has a slight "click" feel in it as it rises to its highest point. If I don't feel this click, the shell will not enter; if I do, the shell slides right in. I can not spot any kind of a burr or material that may be causing this (although that doesn't mean that there isn't one). Additionally, changing out the aluminum follower by GG&G with a plastic one from Elite seems to have noticably helped.

New SPX and owner new to semi-auto shotguns

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum.

I am experienced firearms owner/user, but I have zero experience with auto loading shotguns. I have SPX that has been in the back of my safe since I purchased it new about a year ago.

I just have a few questions as to the manual of arms and proper functioning of this shotgun.

Starting with the SPX unloaded and uncocked. If you load the magazine and then retract and release the bolt, should a round from the magazine be fed into the chamber? Or does the first one have to be dropped in through the ejection port?

With my SPX magazine loaded, chamber empty, I can work that bolt as many times as I want and nothing is fed from the magazine.

Am I doing something incorrectly or mid understanding how that should operate?

Re: New SPX and owner new to semi-auto shotguns

Welcome to the site. Here is how it should work. With the bolt closed, load the tube. Then you pull the bolt handle back all the way and release it. That should pull a round out of the tube, put it on the lifter and then push it into the chamber. Make sure the round is pushed all the way into the tube. If it isn't working like that, something is wrong and you should contact Mossberg. Good luck.

Howdy sniperinblue and welcome to the club. Let us know it goes with cleaning, and the fun time you will have with Mossberg CS.

Mossberg 930 shell ejection issue

I have 2-year-old 930. When I took it out for the first time the spent shells wouldn't eject from the chamber. Has anybody had this issue? If so, what was the fix?

Thank you,
Mike

Re: Mossberg 930 shell ejection issue

What ammo are you using, specifically what muzzle velocity rating?

Underpowered ammo can lead to extraction/ejection issues in the 930 platform so you want to stick with ammo rated at muzzle velocities of 1200fps and above. Other than that, you may try disassembly and cleaning of the action. If it's been sitting a while, it may just need a little cleaning and lube...

Re: Mossberg 930 shell ejection issue

Chances are you just need to get her wet. The first time I took mine out with low velocity shells she didn't flip out a single one. But took her home, and got her lubricated real well and she started spittin out shells like she was meant to.

Re: Mossberg 930 shell ejection issue

Clean and lubed is the key. I reload my own ammo, super light on the powder, it sounds like a popgun but still ejects with no issue.

Re: New SPX and owner new to semi-auto shotguns

The cleaning helped some. I removed the side saddle and unfortunately misplaced one of the trigger housing pins. So, I called Mossberg and they are sending me out a pair for free. They were very nice. I'm hoping that this will take care of the issue. I can live without the side saddle. I see there are a multitude of issues with them and the 930. I guess I'll just throw one of those shell holders on the buttstock.

Re: Loading Jams

Surely, this has got to be an omen that Obama will lose (thank God!), as I have found the problem! It seems that there is a slot on the underside of the bolt, approx 3/8" long, that one of the wings of the elevator hits as it rises. From this, the elevator does not go up enough to allow the shells to clear the magazine opening and load. I do not know what piece of the bolt fills this slot, but because it is part of the bolt (? I think ?), I do not want to do any grinding on it. The elevator is a different story. Only one of its "wings" strikes this "tab," so I feel a little grinding on this one wing will give me the clearance to feed new shells easily. Remember as I said above, if I could feel a "click" when pushing up the elevator, the shells would feed easily. Apparently, there is enough slop in the elevator's mounting points that if pushed to one side, the elevator will clear this tab.

Of you learned gunners out there, what is this tab :?: ? If I do not want to grind on my elevator, do you know of replacement elevators that may clear it?

You're GOING DOWN, OBAMA  , YOU LYING SOCIALIST B**TARD! The Mossberg gods are clearing the way!

Got 930 SPX back from Mossberg customer service today

Hi Guys-

I am new to the world of shotguns, so since I bought a 930 SPX, I have read all the posts on this website pertaining to this model. I have learned a lot. Thank you to everyone who contributes to this forum.

I have had many of the problems others have described with this gun. Note that I cleaned and lubed it prior to using it for the first time. And I continue to do so after each day's use.

Among the problems I have experienced at FTEs, frequent type three malfunctions, the magazine not accepting 7 (2.75") shells all the time, gashes on the mag tube at the fore end, shells not always coming out of the mag when I try to unload the gun (they would come half way out, and I would have to pull them out with my fingers or push them back into the mag tube and try again), and the gas piston not moving freely. Also, the barrel did not go into the receiver easily, even though I lubed it.

Some of the problems were ammo-related, and improved when I used different ammo. I later went to a two-day tactical shotgun class to learn how to run the gun properly. It was a struggle. I cleaned and lubed the gun after the first day. By the afternoon of the second day, it had almost stopped working. When I took it apart to clean it, I found the gas piston would not slide freely – it was binding in its tube. At this point I had put a total of around 500 rounds through the gun since getting it brand new.

I called Mossberg when I got home and described these problems. They told me to send it in. They received it on Tuesday, October 16, and I got it back today, Thursday, October 25.

They replaced following items: The barrel, the mag tube and the mag spring.

They included a note about cleaning the gas piston. I cleaned the gas piston with solvent and a brush, but I wasn't taking the whachamacallits out of the piston to clean them and scrub the slot they ride in, so that one's probably on me. I have seen the video about disassembly of the piston and cleaning it, so I'll be doing that from now on.

Anyway, I am unable to test drive my shotgun until the first week in November, so I have to wait to see how well it works.

I tried three times to load seven in the mag tube, and had no problems. I tried three times to unload the mag tube with no problems, so hopefully those problems are behind me now.

Since I want a shotgun to be my primary home defense weapon, reliability is paramount. At the shotgun class I attended, I saw that several people had problems running their semi-autos (not 930 SPXs), less so the pump guns.

I guess buying this model of Mossberg is a crap shoot. Some guys have nothing but headaches while others say they run great with no problems. It was unrealistic to think I might be getting Benelli quality for a quarter the price. So, I'll see how it goes. If the gun won't run reliably, it's no good to me.

When I take the gun out next month, I'll report back.

Thank you,
Larry

Re: Got 930 SPX back from Mossberg customer service today

Sorry to see you were having these issues Larry,

Thank you for taking the time to post your details. It's good that Mossberg has made it right and we're definitely looking forward to your next report after you've had an opportunity to run it a bit. The SPX models have surely had a lions share of issues, but their more expensive Italian cousins have been known to cause some of the same issues and frustration among their owners. One can understand a company having issues with a particular model, but to have the same failures regularly repaired and documented you would think Mossberg would have found a solution by now. I fully understand not wanting to trust your life to it at this point. I love my 930, but the 590a1 will always be my go-to for HD. Good luck at the range...

Re: 930 SPX Shell lifter stuck

Just bought my 930SPX in the spring of 2012 and with less than 50 shells through it I find it having the same lifter jam issue. After a thorough cleaning, following the directions, I can get it to duplicate the problem with or without shells loaded.
From what I can tell the issue relates to the lever underneath that slants out when the bolt pulls back and the lifter is pushed up simulating loading a fresh shell from the mag tube. In the view from the bottom - follow the bolt handle back towards the gun and you will see the lever sticking out.
I went up to the store last week and looked at a new one and no matter what I did the lever on the new gun would not stick out as far as mine does and the one in your photo above.
It's like the lever can't get out of the way fast enough for the lifter to cycle and jams it in the upward position.
I have to wonder if this is a break in problem?
Should I just go run some high power loads thru it while it works out the boogers?

Had 2 problems with my spx today **updated with video**

1. like others. the shell lifter was getting stuck in the up position. only happened 2 times while firing it out of about 150 rounds. but i can get it to do this often by just working the action by hand.no shells in gun

2.shooting 3 inch mag buck shot.sometimes it would not chamber a round after firing the first one. it would release the second round out of the mag tube but it would fall to the ground :?

2nd shell wont always fire

1 year old 930 with a slug barrel, I was sighting it in for the upcoming Illinois shotgun season and after taking six shots i loaded up 3 shells and took my first shot. everything had gone fine up to this point, went to take a second shot and when I pulled the trigger, nothing! it was if the safety was on, but it was not, a new shell had cycled everything seemed fine. took out the trigger assembly oiled it everything looked ok, put it back together and tried again. First shot was fine second shot the same thing happened. Keeping the gun pointed down range i kept pulling on the trigger the first 6 or 7 times it was if the safety was on then the 8th time, BOOM the gun goes off. Is there any one else experiencing this problem or any one have an idea of a solution? my gunsmith doesnt sound like he can have it ready for me opening day, so I hope I take a good first shot!! Thank you for taking the time to look at my issue!
