North Haven, CT – Innovation-driven and established industry leaders, O.F. Mossberg and Sons, Inc. and Mathews, Inc. have partnered to develop a new Recoil Reduction System which will be featured on seven new Mossberg pump-action shotguns in 2013. This exclusive system features a unique Mossberg Dual-Comb® (low and high profile inserts) stock design incorporating Mathews Harmonic Damper Technology combined with a newly re-engineered thermoplastic elastomer recoil pad. The result is up to 20% reduction in felt recoil and added comfort in the field or at the range. The Mossberg Recoil Reduction System will be available on select 835® Ulti-Mag® and 535 ATS™ Turkey and Waterfowl 12
gauge 3 ½-inch pump-action shotguns and two 500® 12-gauge 3-inch pump-actions, a convenient Field/Deer Two-Barrel Combo and a special-purpose Tactical 6-Shot model.

Well-known in the world of archery and bowhunting, the Mathews Harmonic Damper incorporates a patented counter-phase technology that interrupts the recoil wave while weights floating in an internal elastomer wheel absorb recoil vibrations. The Mathews Damper is housed in an exclusive Mossberg stock with interchangeable low and high profile combs to ensure a more comfortable fit and overall reduction of felt recoil as the recoil wave is interrupted when it passes through the stock. Additional comfort is provided by the recoil-absorbing, thermoplastic elastomer recoil pad. Together reducing felt recoil up to 20%.

Mossberg pump-action shotguns are designed for reliable, smooth operation with the combination of dual extractors, twin-action bars, positive steel-to-steel lock-up and an anti-jam elevator. All receivers are drilled and tapped for the addition of scope base or Picatinny rail and feature Mossberg’s universally-recognized, ambidextrous top-mounted safety. Other standard features include rear and mag cap sling swivel studs, padded sling (Waterfowl and Turkey models) and interchangeable choke tube systems (excluding the 500 Tactical 6-Shot cylinder bore model).

835 Ulti-Mag Recoil Reduction System Shotguns – Renowned as the world’s first 12 gauge 3 ½-inch pump-action, these hard-hitting shotguns feature overbored (10 gauge bore dimensions) and ported barrels to deliver tight consistent patterns with less muzzle jump for quicker shot recovery. The Turkey (63526) version has a 24-inch vent rib barrel with Ulti-Full choke tube, adjustable fiber optic sights (for windage and elevation) and is fully-camouflaged with Mossy Oak® Break-Up® Infinity™. The two Waterfowl (66721/62143) versions have 28-inch vent rib barrels and respectively, feature black synthetic stock and forend, dual bead sights and Modified choke tube; and full coverage in Realtree MAX-4®, ACCU-MAG™ choke tube set (Full, Modified and Improved Cylinder) and fiber optic front bead sight. MSRP: $547 - $630

535 ATS Recoil Reduction System Shotguns – This versatile, all-purpose 12 gauge 3 ½-inch shotgun builds on the 835 Ulti-Mag and 500 pump-action platforms with its shortened magazine tube and lighter weight for improved balance without sacrificing capacity and well-designed Uni-Line Stock and Receiver. The soft-angled receiver of the 535 marries perfectly with the stock for eye/rib alignment and quick target acquisition. The Turkey (45449) version has a 22-inch vent rib barrel, XX-Full choke tube, adjustable fiber optic sights and is fully-covered in Mossy Oak Break-Up Infinity camo. The Waterfowl (45232) model features a 28-inch vent rib barrel, ACCU-CHOKE™ choke tube set (Full, Modified
and Improved Cylinder) and fiber optic front bead sight. MSRP: $547

Safety and safe firearms handling is everyone’s responsibility.

500 Recoil Reduction System Shotguns – With 10 million in production, these 12 gauge 3-inch pump actions are recognized for their rugged dependability and versatility. Two models feature the new Recoil Reduction System – the Field/Deer Combo (52279) is fully-camouflaged in Mossy Oak Break-Up Infinity and comes standard with a 28-inch vent rib, ported barrel with dual bead sights and ACCU-CHOKE choke tube set AND a 24-inch ported, fully-rifled barrel with adjustable rifle sights. The Tactical 6-Shot (54122) is designed for multi-purpose use with its 18 1/2-inch cylinder bore barrel, front bead sight, durable black synthetic stock and forend with complementing matte blue metal finish. MSRP: $543 - $568

Pump-action shotguns are synonymous with the legendary Mossberg name. As the industry’s leading pump-action shotgun manufacturer and the first to introduce a 3 ½-inch pump, designing and building shotguns to handle the most- punishing magnum shells defines the brand. Now Mossberg establishes another first in pump guns by incorporating a recoil reduction system in partnership with Mathews, utilizing cutting-edge technology from the archery world. Shoot one today and feel the difference!

Interesting. I've owned a Matthews bow that used the same technology. Curious to see how it works for the recoil of a gun.

I am hoping they have some at the media day at SHOT show so that I can give it a try.

That sounds really cool! I wonder I they may incorporate that into their rifles at some point? I think I rather have something like this as opposed to the muzzle brake on my .338

They will be having the brass anodized black or covered in camo when they are officially released...

It is supposed to reduce recoil up to about 20%. I am trying to get one to test.

Interesting...but why only 20% when the compstock has a higher percentage? Will they be selling jusr the stock too or only as a complete firearm?

Great pix by the way Dan, as usual. :)

Not sure to be honest but I don't think it will be sold separately yet.

At Shot show, Mossberg revealed a new technology? for those sensitive to RECOIL! If it works as advertised would be of help to the tactical and competitive shooter.

The only downside on paper that I have seen is that it only reduces felt recoil by 20%. I am trying to get my hands on a stock to do some real world testing with.

Sorry Dan I didn't see your Jan 11 post with all the detail. I'm curious in some first hand reviews and what the cost of the stock would be. I didn't see anything yet on Mossbergs site.

Any fan of Mossberg pump guns will tell you, they are the greatest guns on the planet, except that they kick like a mule. When you try the 3″ and 3 1/2″ guns, meant for turkey and waterfowl, the effects can be downright punishing, and I have seen even 2 3/4″ buckshot send a 6 foot 3 inch grown man stumbling backwards. Granted, you can wield a Mossberg 500/590, or even the 835 effectively in both hunting and tactical situations, but you are going to know that you shot the gun. When someone says “eh, that .50 cal. doesn’t kick anymore than a 12 gauge,” keep in mind they are probably talking about a Mossberg pump gun. But hold the bus, Mossberg has a new product line they seem to be testing in the market that is a “harmonic damper,” built right into the stock of their iconic working man’s shotguns.

The system is made by a company called Mathews, which specializes in bows, as in bow and arrows. Somehow this company developed a “push back” technology that seems to work on something of a gyroscope methodology, turning the recoil on itself to push backwards. We are eager to get one of these guns to try, so for now all we can tell you is that there are going to be 7 introductory models, and all of them, including the tactical, will have a special stock with the recoil whosawhatsit and a special adjustable comb. The firearms community doesn’t take easily to new concepts, but it looks like Mossberg has a lot of hope for this new system, and it could revolutionize what we think of as a fixed amount of recoil in fixed breech (ie. pump and over/under and sxs) shotguns. They have a new recoil pad with this system as well, so it will be interesting to see the end result, which is hopefully the opposite of a purple and yellow shoulder after a day of shooting. Everyone’s favorite shotgun is learning some new tricks this year, comfortable ones, 100% made in the USA. There are pages in the new Mossberg catalog dedicated to these guns, so they appear to be for real, but no MSRP or availability information was available.
