This is a short list of what should be covered in a HD class, provided by a NRA and MS Enhanced Carry Instructor:

1. Types of Handguns, Single Action Vs Double Action VS DAO Pistol and Revolvers, including Striker Fire the advantages and disadvantages of each and how to clean and maintain each.
2. The 5 Fundamentals of shooting.
3. MUZZLE AWARENESS - I can't tell you how many "experienced shooters" still sweep people with "unloaded guns"
4. The 3 Safety rules (see number 3)
5. Safe gun and ammo storage and all the different options for keeping a gun out of the hands of children
6. The 4 levels of Awareness
7. Firearms are a tool of last resort - Including real world examples of when to use force and when not to use force. Example - You should not shoot at a burglar fleeing your home for several reasons.
A) You may miss and send a round into a home, car or person that you didn't intend to shoot
B) You may hit and injure him and then he turns around and pulls a gun on you and shoots you.
C) If you have kids, they will have to experience a scene of a human being screaming, moaning and bleeding to death in your doorway.
D) You will never forget that scene in your mind and every time you walk by that place in your home you will relive that experience.

AND YOU DID THIS ALL BECAUSE HE WAS RUNNING OUT WITH YOUR TV????? Which probably busted when he dropped it after you shot him..

6. The Physiological and Psychological things that will happen to you in a life or death situation such as
A) Loss of fine motor skills
B) Tunnel Vision
C) Time dilation
D) Lack of coordination when an adrenaline dump occurs
E) How to deal with and overcome these issues

7) Defensive Accuracy
8.)Scanning / Flash Sight target acquisition and at what distance you can still hit center mass with these techniques
9) How to deal with the police when they respond to a call
10) How to setup and use a SafeRoom in your home.
11) The Laws associated with Open Carry, Concealed Carry, Enhanced Carry and how to obtain your permit.
12) Castle law, reasonable force vs excessive force
13) Types of holsters and the advantages and disadvantages of each
14) The proper techniques to draw from a holster
15) The difference between cover and concealment how to shoot from them and how to move to and from them
16) Low light shooting
17) The ability to reload without looking at your firearm
18) The importance of dry firing practice at home
19) Available options for home dry fire training
20) The importance of a plan in case of a home invasion
21) What your spouse and kids should do in case of a home invasion
22) "No Fire" zones in your home.
23) How to make your home more safe both inside and out
24) The importance of being a responsible gun owner and how it impacts the media and the 2nd amendment
25) Using Proper terminology for firearms & accessories and why it MATTERS!
26) Diffusing the stereotypes of gun owners..

That's the short list? I agree this should be taught in a classroom setting, then simulate for real life...once a trigger is pulled you can't take it back.

Yep. And you haven't even stepped out on to the range yet. The guy who provided this has been an instructor for quite a few years.

Being a martial arts instructor and having a minor in psychology you have to balance the different ways people learn. The 3 main ways people learn are:

Auditory
Visual
Tactile

Some people get it once they hear it, some get it when you show them, others get it when they actually do it.

Having all this done in a classroom is fine and dandy but many tend to just isolate just one or two group of learners.

For example... muzzle awareness. You can tell the class dont muzzle sweep your neighbor. Then show them what a muzzle sweep is with a training pistol. Next have the class line up and work on not muzzle sweeping the partner by asking questions while they hold the training pistol or focus their attention on something else and show how simple it could be to muzzle sweep someone inadvertantly.

That would make for a more complete classroom experience in my opinion.
