Enhancing barrel accuracy straight out of the box.

Noob here expecting a call any day about my MVP coming in. Excited is to say the least.

I was wanting to post this to get reactions from the membership about my game plan on dressing this bore before the first shot is fired.

Understandably, a thorough cleaning of the entire rifle is planned.

Secondly, I will be applying information and products recommended from two sources:

http://www.davidtubb.com/final-finish-tms

http://www.accuracysystemsinc.com/Barrel_Break-In.php

A fist full of Bore Snakes, J&B Cleaning Compound and J&B's mirror finish compound will be used prior, during and after as a final dressing during the use of David Tubb's fire lapping FinalFinish Kit.

Mossberg Owners, what say you?

YMMV, but IMHO that's really a waste of good steel unless you're shooting competitive benchrest and have lots of money and time to replace barrels. Just - shoot - it. :D

I agree with jnewell.

I considered purchasing the tubbs bullets in the past, but realistically, any barrel (especially new) doesn't take long to "break in" without it.

The main thing the tubbs bullets are like fine grit sandpaper being shot through your barrel.

If you have major burrs or machining imperfections, it may help (MAYBE--SOME), but I never would shoot them through one of mine.

What are you going to be doing with your new rifle ?

Shoot paper out to 400 yards. Be prepared to harvest meat long range if needed and also be capable of poking holes in blue helmets if needed. All on a budget.

I don't shoot a lot, but what I do shoot I like to be exceptionally accurate.

Sounds like a good goal…I’ll tell ya if you can swing it and it makes you feel better then that’s probably a good thing but I encourage you to shoot it first. You might be surprised, you mention extremely accurate and budget in the same breath, that’s a tough one……depending on your definition of extremely accurate at 400 yards.
I have hunted most my life and started shooting before that and have never even heard of breaking in rifles until like 10 years ago, I have killed a lot of stuff and its all been through rifles that have been shot the crap out of right out of the box….dropped, kicked over in camp, shot some more.
sometimes I think stuff gets taken just a little too far……I used to make .22 barrels for a living and never even heard of it then.
If you make a living trying to put them all through the same hole or compete in the Olympics I could see it then I guess

That being said if something makes you shoot a little better or you get some sort of mental edge out of it and its worth it to you then I say go for it…..I only get that way when I absolutely cant shoot a gun good but I try like hell the way it came first, I usually just do the trigger as most barrels are more accurate than the people pulling the trigger in my opinion……

How does one "break in" a barrel? I've never had to do that on any gun I have owned. They've all shot well right out of the box.

Am I missing something here? All my barrels have come perfectly smooth and if I ever do see any burring, I'm not gonna just shoot it till' its smooth. I'm gonna break out a file or wire wheel. I don't see how there could be burring though. I also haven't ever received a New gun with a dirt barrel. Used guns, I have-but not new. Am I just missing something here?

This is my shotgun. There are many like it but this one is mine.

I'm looking forward to it downloading so I can learn something new :)

Sounds like you already have your mind made up.

I would be interested to see the gun put in a vise brand new with a few rounds fired through it out of the same box of ammo, and then after the tubbs bullets to shoot for groups again and then again fired after 100 rounds has been shot through it.

My guess is they'll both be very comparable in group size either way.

I'm just not sold on the idea of using a sandpaper bullet on a barrel and expect that to "accurize it". Much more is involved in accurizing than possibly removing a microscopic burr that would be smoothed with normal use anyway.

Accurizing in my mind is truing the reciever, bedding the action. freefloating the barrel, etc etc etc.

But an accurizing bullet? :?:

If only it were that simple.

You either buy a gun with a good barrel.

Or not.

Hehe. That is awesome! I'll have to remember that quote. Can't believe there isn't a bumper sticker w/ that on it.

Why blue ones? You think the United Nations is the biggest enemy we have? I think the biggest needs to be defeated in the hearts and minds of our own mislead children. STOP letting the socialists run the schools.

lol, would like to see a follow up on how his polishing bullets did though. and just how accurate he was shooting.

There is a lot of talk over here too about "breaking in" barrels....many people go the "shoot one, clean and repeat, then shoot 5 and repeat...",etc, etc On the other hand, many people say just clean the barrel after un-boxing to get rid of any preservative grease, then shoot the hell out of it...

I've done both, (although its unusual for me to be able to afford new guns!!), and it may be coincidence but the rifle I "broke in" was my worst shooting rifle.. (Rem 700 in .223). Conversely, I recently bought a Romanian AKM, and had to strip it and dunk it in white spirit to get the cosmoline out of it. Cleaned the barrel as normal then shot 200rds through it, and that shoots more accuratly that the Rem 700 ever did.

I'll be getting an MVP LC shortly, and will just clean as normal, then shoot. Depending on how much copper gets left in the barrel after the first outing, I may scrub with some KG2 to polish it a bit, but after that just normal cleaning.

what is funny, when folks go though all the crap, still not grouping and it was the ammo the entire time ......
