It looks like the hack got more than we thought. According to this they also got personnel records on all current and former military.

The union believes the hackers stole military records and veterans' status information, address, birth date, job and pay history, health insurance, life insurance, and pension information; and age, gender and race data, he said. The letter was obtained by The Associated Press.

The union said it is basing its assessment on internal OPM briefings. The agency has sought to downplay the damage, saying what was taken "could include" personnel file information such as Social Security numbers and birth dates.

Nice, real nice. Apparently it was going on for a while before being found. Got to love how well our government agencies protect OUR info...

Nothing connected to the internet is safe, no matter how secure you think it is, someone will figure out how to break into it eventually. It is the reality of the digital age. This is esp true if you have personal or financial data that is valuable to those that want it.

It was probably another government office that hacked it or had a role in it.
