Greener Grass: the tall and short of it

The Grass Is Always Greener over the fence, they say.

I was always confounded by the fact that I never grew past 5 foot 11 and I always expected to be 6 feet tall.

BUT, my little sweetiepie is only 5 foot nothing & she still kicks azz.

Some things are harder for small people but some things are much easier.

Working on tiny cars, for instance, is much easier for small people.

Heavy trucks, however, not so much.

Crawling around in attics and such is pretty tough for a big guy.

But small people have an advantage at things like watchmaking and jewelry making and Firearms making and things that require very small precise actions, or operation in tight locations.

Physiologically there must be an optimal size and shape for human beings but I'm not sure what it is. It always seemd to be an inch taller than whatever I was.

Now it seems to me that in modern society it's better to be average. The world changes to favor the average and this is why :

Coal Miner's traditionally had to bring their own shovel. Small guys brought a small shovel and big guys brought a big shovel. That seemed to work out well for the shovelers, who were paid by the ton of coal.

About 200 years ago some smart mining engineer figured out that coal mining would be improved if everyone used a standardized company shovel, and he was right.

Production improved because the average person was bringing a shovel that was slightly too small.

But a lot of the workers hated it, because big guys could not make as much money with a smaller shovel and small guys had a hard time lifting the standard shovel so they made less money too. The average worker made a bit more.

The coal company of course made lots more money.

I'm afraid that lots of these young socialists are going to be very disappointed when they get a one-size-fits-all-world.

John, that was in Britain & well before coal mining became real popular in America.

Ok.

Nevertheless, I'm always glad to see a socialist suffer because of their own stupidity.

Human Society is a very strange organization.

People have a certain need to belong and to feel a part of everything. But then there get to be too many people belonging in too-small a venue, and the whole thing becomes an ordeal where there should be a benefit.

Some people break away and form something else and eventually that grows and the same thing happens again.

Lather rinse repeat....

We spend way too much time on entertainment in this country and way too little time on historical education. People who don't know the past will constantly reinvent the wheel. And I'm not just talking about the physical wheel, but they must reinvent the functional social wheels that motivate society to operate.

The cost of doing that is ridiculous but evidently some people feel like it doesn't matter because others will bear that burden.

Social Warrior Robin Hoods will see to that.
