Thanks for the advice, @Bathrobeman

Sand can sure stop bullets pretty ricki-tick.
Noobish question. So at 25 yds the jacket came off the bullet. At say 100 yds do you think that there would be way less damage done to the round, or do you think it would fragment “good enough?”
I realize there are a million variables, but if we were speaking in generalities, what’s typically the case? If it “grenades” at 25 will it fragment at 100?

Bathrobeman....

In my humblest opinion...

Shooting bullets into sand and then recovering the bullet fragments for you to examine is a waste of time and ammunition.

Ha I know, it’s just a curiosity thing, not to get too scientific. Mainly curious/hopeful if that bullet will be a winner or a zonk out at a distance. It flies well, I just hope it’ll do sum damage and not “ice pick” on through medium sized stuff. When in doubt, ear-hole em I guess.

One time my brother set up a milkcrate with wet newspaper hanging in it. It worked to expand the hollowpoint .45ACP he was "testing" but packed the hollow with paper... :D

I was able to get the range to get it zeroed at a distance and I believe I have it dialed in good enough for hunting etc. I think my scope mount woes are solved. Blue Loctite.
It was a windy day so it made it tough, and I don’t have a vice and I couldn’t use my bags b/c the stupid “range booth” front wall was too low. So it was just me and the warped table top. But anyway it went like this.
With 75 grains and an initial zero that was a little over an inch high at 25 yds resulted in 4” or so high at 50 yds. A 50 yd zero resulted in an inch or so high at 100 yds. However, with a 55gr .223 zeroed at 50 yds it was an inch or so low at 100 yds. This is with an M4 style AR with a 16” barrel that has a 1-8 twist if memory serves.
I’m gonna rock the 50 yd zero I do believe. On a calmer day I’m going to work on dialing in left & right, but for now it’s good enough for the dirty work. I’ve shot this ammo on still day out to 175 yds or so and it “big hole” groups, so it flies where ya point it. TBD if it will perform like a “match bullet” or a “varmint bullet” on a varmint. I gotta find some wet newspaper :)
