Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Crisis Response-Central Command, a 2,500 strong element of Marines operating in Iraq and around the Middle East, is the rumored option to provide aircraft for search-and-rescue missions for Operation Inherent Resolve. The unit includes a squadron of Ospreys, now based in Kuwait, that were tasked late last year to lead tactical recovery of aircraft and personnel (TRAP) missions for the entire U.S. Central Command theater of operations.

In a Feb. 5 interview with Marine Corps Times, Commandant Gen. Joseph Dunford confirmed that mission set, but declined to describe current operations.

"Anything that we would do for TRAP in CENTCOM is part of the special purpose MAGTF that is there. So they have a squadron of V-22s, those are all available to the combatant commander," Dunford said. "What I can't tell you now is how many of those they said they want to preposition somewhere else."

This is not an opposed combat assault, but it is complicated and well choreographed. Operations will come later, once the FOB is established.

I know how these things used to work. By the time the media got wind of it, it would already be well underway. There would be an advance party go in first, a couple weeks or month in advance to prepare the site for the follow on troops and aircraft. Likely a couple companies for security first, along with combat engineers, etc. to build living quarters (tents most likely unless they're moving into an established base), mess, latrines, supplies of all sorts (including spare parts & engines), vehicles & equipment to move and maintain the aircraft, layered security, portable hangers and maintenance sheds, fuel bladders, ammo bunkers, etc. A long list of things. The aircraft and crews would be the last to show up. They don't just drop in all at once.

The USMC has had a lot of practice at this.

Please keep us posted if you hear more.

I will, but they won't be releasing any operational details. However, the Osprey is a multi-role cargo and troop carrier, and is usually escorted by gunships, and/or fixed wing attack a/c so this squadron won't be at this FOB by themselves.
