Missing America

Ernst, it sounds like you are describing my grandparents place. I spent a lot of time there in the summers. They had a phone with either an oak or walnut case that hung on the wall. Every house in town (180 people) had to place calls through the switchboard.

We lived in a bigger town, had a rotary phone, and we're on a party line.

I remember even in high school my phone use was limited to one call, 5 minutes per evening. Imagine parents trying to put a limit like that on their kids today. Probably end up in court and the kid would be awarded damages.
