Mossberg 930 Autoloader Reviews...

Re: 930 SPX Pattern Test 00 Buck & Turkey Load

Good post.

I saw a box of the Hornady turkey ammo at Dunhams the other day and almost pick up a box.

Just a quick review on the 930 SPX .

I have put around 1000 rounds through mine now, and I couldnt be happier.

I purchased several guns at the time I purchased the mossberg 930 spx , and out of all of them, this is the best one.

I have had zero issues with this weapon !

Gave it a very deep cleaning before the first shot...

I have put almost every popular brand of ammunition , 2 3/4 inch and 3 inch , from bird shot to slugs and everything in between through this gun.

Everything has cycled and ejected without problems.

The mag tube is a bit stiff with certain brands , but no feed problems.

I did everything possible to cause a fail or malfunction, and the Mossberg 930 spx would have NONE of it ! I shot this gun with 30 year old ammo , in the rain, in the heat , and the fog.. no problems !
I even let it get filthy and put it through the paces , and still no problems.

Great patterning , I love how this gun shoots. The Battle sights on it are spot on.

Buck shot of nearly every brand was hitting all pellets on body mass @ 50 yards.. and with rifled slugs its surgical out to 100 yards with the battle sights.

Had a small issue with the Tube Clamp sliding a bit when doing some really hard core shooting on it , even though the tube clamp was very tight... a very minor issue, and the only one I have had.

Overall, 10/10 , If I had to grab one gun to save my life, this would be the one I went for.

Hey I'm wondering how you got these ghost ring sights installed with the heat shield? I have the exact same gun and only sight option I found was the tru-dot night sight? Where did you buy this from?

Mossberg 930 SPX Range Review

I was able to get to the range today to test out my newly purchased Mossberg 930 SPX. I purchased the gun to better compete in 3-Gun matches but as with most everything I decide to spend my hard earned money on, I had to justify the purchase for more than that. So I also plan to use this as a HD/SHTF gun pending finding the right ammo and a couple additions/modifications (more on that in an additional thread later).

When I picked up the gun I checked to make sure the sights were not canted, the mag tube fed shells and the the top rail wasn't going anywhere, all was GTG. Today I took her apart for a good cleaning, re-assembled and gathered up 5 kinds of ammo to head for the range. When I got there I set my targets up at 25 yards, loaded up the tube and squeezed off that first round. With the nicer weather this week the range was very busy so I had limited options on distance. One of the very first things I noticed about this shotgun is how crisp and light the trigger pull is. It is NOTHING like my 500 or 590 and nothing like I have ever experienced from any shotgun, to say the least, I am very impressed with the trigger.

However to my dismay, that first shot landed about 6" low but with a quick sight adjustment I was on target. My guess is this is because it was sighted in at the factory at a much closer distance. I may re-adjust the zero but I will have to play with different rounds vs. distances taking into account the guns dual role before I finalize that.

Caught her resting

I shot ~80 rounds through her today with only 1 FTE and I honestly think that was a fluke as there were 0 other issues. I fired everything from cheap Walmart target ammo to Winchester Low Recoil Winchester Ranger slugs through it today. The recoil was very manageable and the buttpad kept my shoulder from getting sore even after 80 rounds

I mixed the shells up in all various orders with no other issues than the one above.

Federal Field & Target
Winchester Universal
Winchester AA Target
Winchester Ranger Low Recoil 00 Buck
Winchester Ranger Low Recoil 1oz Slug

I have shot more shotgun in the last month than the 3-4 previous YEARS so I still have a bit of work to do but I found the sights on the SPX to be very easy to pick up and since I mostly shoot ARs, felt right at home behind them. I can see how some find them slow but my guess is they have a lot of time behind a bead or "rifle" sights. I expect the sights to be very fast while shooting in 3-Gun matches.

The aftermath

Pros:
Weight
Trigger
Semi-Auto
7+1
Decent amount of aftermarket parts available
Reliable
Price for the value

Cons:
LOP too long (I plan on changing that)
The mag tube spring has about taken my eye out twice now.
No choke options

Planned mods:
Shorten the stock to about 13"
Magpul AFG
Light mount
Mag tube clamp
+5 Mag tube extension
Larger safety
Sling mounts
Get the barrel threaded for chokes?
Side saddle?

Thanks for looking and I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Re: Mossberg 930 SPX Range Review

Nice review! Glad she functioned fine.

I'm running the 3 Gun Gear velcro side saddle on both my 590A1 and my 930 SPX. So far I have been very happy with the product. I was also eyeing the Havlin side saddle which seems to be the integrated in the picatinny rail. I've heard horror stories with other side saddles for the 930 that need to be mounted on as it may cause function issues.

Re: Mossberg 930 SPX Range Review

Thanks!

After my AFG/rail mod, I ran another 25 rounds through her, still functioning flawlessly. I really like this gun.

Nicely done man! Appreciate the write up!

Re: Mossberg 930 SPX Vs Blackwater - IN A NUT SHELL -

I'm pretty sure the charging handles are the same. The sights on the standard spx are nicer with a removable lpa ghost ring sight on the picatinny rail (the Blackwater edition looks kind of cheaper and is integrated in the picatinny rail preventing removal without trading out the whole rail) the front sights on the spx are high vis fiber optic sights (Blackwater is a white strip of paint) and the spx imo looks cleaner without that big gaudy logo on the side (imo).

Really it's a matter of preference and i personally like the features on the spx better and also like the standard stock better. The pg stock leaves much to be desired in looks and the recoil pad is useless. Can't wait for another pg to be made so i can sell this one. Until then Monte Carlo stock it is.

Re: Mossberg 930 SPX Vs Blackwater - IN A NUT SHELL -

I don't know where you got the idea that the Blackwater's sights are cheap. They're XS Ghost Rings and are lower to the bore axis. If you see the White Stripe as a problem. XS's 24/7 Tritium Stripe is far easier to obtain than LPA's factory tritium replacement. I own a 930 Blackwater and that's what I've done. Replacement time on the XS 24/7 is under 5 minutes.

It's pretty much the same set of XS Ghost Rings we see on the Remington 870 Express Tac's. With a minor front sight blade difference.

Like all 930 SP's. One has to remove the Choate Magazine extension and toss it over your shoulder. Replacing both the extension, spring and follower. I suggest Nordic Components, Wolff, and GG&G for the reliability package. In that order.

The Charging Handle is the same one that comes on all late model 930 SP shotguns. It's adequate, But I replaced mine with the Nordic Components Charging Handle. Just a personal preference.

If you look in the 930 pics. my 930 Blackwater is near the end. Should you want a reference photo or simply to see what can be done with one.

I've got about 600 rounds though mine and have no problems with it.

MOSSBERG 930spx SIGNATURE SERIES information needed?

Can anyone provide a link or images of the MOSSBERG 930 SIGNATURE SERIES chamfered loading port? I am interested in how it looks, I have looked on many sites and forums and have not been able to find detailed images of this detail. Any assistance would be appreciated, Thank you for your time.

Mossberg 930 3-Gun Discussion...

There was a good showing of 930s and all ran 100%. In fact the only failure of the day was a Benelli with a slight FTF issue.

Hmmm. A couple of shot shells and duct tape for a cheek pad. Interesting thought.

Paul

Yes, he had a wood dowel rod notched and contoured and then duct taped to the stock. It was pretty fugly but seemed to work well.

mossberg 930 questions

i just put a 930 home defense on layaway, it has a normal 18.5" barrel with bead, i decided i would "build" it the way i see fit and can afford and i have most every thing picked out for it but their are a few things i have no idea on what i want to do.

Sights: i like the lpa sights but i would rather have them affixed to my gun, i dont see the need for a red dot or a rail on the top. so my question here is where can you get front and rear lpa's and what other ghost sights are out their that are any good ? i like the rear sight to have the "wings" on each side.

barrel mods: i like the vang comp set up but are their any other places that do that type of work for a better price ?

and lastly, mesa or tac star when it comes to the side saddle ? like the mesa all metal but 80 bucks is high

and lastly, what about trigger work ? and does any thing need honed on the 930 to make it run smoother ?

Re: mossberg 930 questions

Welcome to the Mossberg Owners Forum !!

Sounds like a good start...don't think you'll need trigger work. You'll know once you get it out on the range.
