Mossberg Model 44 US, Govertnment Property

I know these were ordered by the gov't as military trainers. But in what capacity? Did the Army start all GI's in Basic Training with these, were they for training snipers (I've seen than mentioned)? Other than the obvious, there isn't much I've been able to find.

I picked one up recently, marked U. S. Property, and was also told many came out surplus through the CMP.

Anyone have a definitive history?

I know they were used as trainers. In how many numbers, I do not know.
