Mossberg® MVP Series of Bolt-Action Rifles Introduced at NRA Convention

2038322.jpeg

North Haven, CT - O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc. announces a new line of dedicated varmint and predator bolt-action rifles, the MVP (Mossberg Varmint Predator) Series, based on the overwhelming success of the Mossberg 4x4™ centerfire rifle. The engineers at Mossberg combined this classic bolt-action platform with the features most highly-desired by dedicated varmint and predator hunters and long-range competitive shooters in this innovative and well-designed series. Notably-setting this family of rifles apart from the competition is its unique, patent-pending bolt design which allows MVP Series rifles to accept and reliably feed from AR-15 style magazines; a breakthrough innovation in bolt-action platforms!

The first rifle in this ground-breaking series, the MVP Series Varmint chambered in 5.56mm NATO (.223 Rem), was recently unveiled at the 2011 NRA Convention in Pittsburgh, PA. Two initial offerings will be available this summer including a standard rifle package with 10-round magazine and factory-installed, Weaver-style bases for customization with optics of the shooter's choice. The second is a convenient combo package which includes the rifle, pre-mounted and bore-sighted 4-16x50mm variable riflescope, bi-pod and 10-round magazine.

The MVP Series Varmint Rifle, chambered in .5.56mm NATO (.223 Rem), has a 1:9 twist rate to optimize bullet performance and accuracy from the 24-inch button-rifled, medium bull barrel which also features a varmint-style crown to protect the muzzle. Stylish fluting reduces weight and increases heat dissipation. The helically-fluted bolt further reduces the rifle's overall weight and adds to its distinctive look. The innovative, patent-pending bolt design allows the rifle to accept AR-15 style aftermarket magazines and the 10-round magazine included from the factory. All metalwork features a matte blue finish.

The grey laminate, benchrest-style stock has an ergonomically-designed pistol grip with palm swell and is pillar bedded for the utmost in shot placement repeatability. Stippling on the forend and pistol grip provide for positive hand placement in any weather condition while the deeply-relieved area behind the pistol grip increases wrist and forearm comfort during long shooting strings. The comb is parallel to the bore centerline to eliminate parallax errors. The wide, flat-bottom forend is perfect for sandbag rests or bipod use.

Performance and accuracy are key to long-range shooting and the MVP Series Varmint rifle, as with all 4x4 bolt-actions, comes standard with Mossberg's Lightning Bolt-Action™ (LBA™) Adjustable Trigger System. Built with durability and reliability in mind, the LBA trigger assembly is machined from aircraft-grade aluminum and hard-coat anodized to military spec, preventing corrosion and minimizing wear. The trigger blade blocks the sear from releasing the striker unless the blade is fully depressed, even at the lightest adjustment setting. And with a simple twist of a standard screwdriver, the LBA trigger is adjustable from 2 to 7 lbs, providing the shooter with the flexibility of adjusting the trigger pull without taking the rifle to a gunsmith. With its distinctive, skeletonized "lightning bolt" trigger blade, the LBA Trigger System offers a truly crisp, creep-free trigger, optimizing accuracy and shot-to-shot consistency.

Other standard features on this MVP Series rifle include sling swivel studs and factory-installed Weaver-style scope bases. Built for performance and featured-packed, this varminter weighs in at mere 7 ¼ lbs and can deliver MOA accuracy right from the box!

This first offering in the MVP Series combines the performance, features and value that hunters and shooters worldwide have come to expect from Mossberg. Be one of the first to own a MVP Series Varmint rifle, see your local Mossberg retailer today.

Mossberg's MVP: A Bolt Action with a Twist

mv0.jpg

Mossberg's finally solved the greatest issue to ever haunt bolt-action rifle shooters since the beginning of time: how do you get more bullets in there without removing your scope?

OK, so maybe bolt-action rifles discarded internal magazines sometime about a century ago, but Mossberg's not undeserving of some credit here. They've taken their most successful rifle, the Mossberg 4x4, and modified it to use AR-15 magazines, and called it the Mossberg Varmint Pistol Predator.

mv2.jpg

(They claim the real secret is getting a rifle to feed from Pmags and whatnot reliably, something that up until now we had always thought ARs seemed to have down.)

mv1.jpg

Like all 4x4 rifles, this Mossberg sports twin scope mounts on the front and rear of the receiver, a fluted barrel, and a Monte Carlo stock with a raised cheekrest. This first version of the rifle comes with or without a scope and is for now only available with a laminate grey wood stock.

Unlike most 4x4s the MVP does not use a flash hider slash muzzle break, it has a cleanly crowned barrel, and for now is only available in 5.56. Which really does seems of interest since you'd think that an AR already has "varminter" covered pretty well.

mv6.jpg

Surely this is the first of many MVPs; many shooters prefer the inherent accuracy of a closed bolt combined with a super-long 24" barrel (especially one that only weighs 7-1/2lbs.). But we have to wonder if this was the right first step for Mossberg, targeting the weekend small-game crowd. Again, if you already have an AR then there's one good reason to buy an MVP, but it's not for want of accuracy or anything like that.

mv3.jpg

Maybe if Mossberg kicked things off with a .308 that took AR magazines (which they should do ASAP, are you listening, Mossberg?) because then they'd have a serious hunting rifle on their hands that would no doubt also make a lot of police armorers happy; if not one manual of arms, at least one manual of magazine.

mv4.jpg

Of course, if you're not at all interested in anything AR or just want another rifle, than this is an excellent choice. The question then becomes, do you get the bone-stock MVP ($650) or the scoped ($800)? Yes, want, go, buy.

Re: NEW!!!! Mossberg 4x4 Bolt Action Rifle MVP

According to Game & Fish/Sportsman Magazine:
"News Flash... O.F. Mossberg & Sons Firearms has found a way to let you use all your AR-style mags with a bolt-action gun! We tried it out at the range and found it smooth and accurate. The MVP Series Varmint Rifle in 5.56/.223 has a flap they are calling a “Drop-Push” on the bolt that descends to grab and feed bullets from just about any AR mag you can find, Tom Taylor, vice president of marketing and sales, told Game & Fish/Sportsman today. AR magazines hold bullets slightly lower than other mags, and traditional boltheads can’t feed them consistently. This drop-push modification dips into the magazine as the carrier moves forward and then slides back flush against the bolt. The drop-push “flap” is secured with a forged steel pin. Durability would be a natural concern, but Taylor said it’s been tested for failure, and passed every test the engineers could come up with. This jump between tactical and traditional is unique. Look for more calibers in the MVP Series in the future. Very cool."

Finally a major gun manufacturer has produced a 5.56mm chambered bolt action that uses the AR-15 magazine. This gives the operator a lot of flexibility, allowing them to choose from any number of aftermarket magazines in a variety of capacities from 5 rounds right up to 60 rounds (I don't think a 100 or 150 round C-Mag would fit the rifle).

Mossberg’s New Mag-Fed Varmint Rifles Look Good

Mossberg has announced its new MVP (Mossberg Varmint Predator) line of dedicated varmint and predator bolt-action rifles, based on the Mossberg 4×4™ centerfire rifle. The big news is that Mossberg’s MVP rifles have a unique, patent-pending bolt design which allows them to reliably feed from AR15 magazines. Yes, we’ve been waiting for that functionality for a long time. Congrats to Mossberg for finally building a small bolt-gun that takes AR mags.

mossmvp01op.png

mossberg MVP varmint predator rifle
The first MVP Series Varminters were recently unveiled at the 2011 NRA Convention in Pittsburgh, PA. Two MVP versions will be offered initially. The first is a standard rifle with 10-round mag and factory-installed, Weaver-style bases. The second is a combo package which includes the rifle, 4-16x50mm scope (mounted), bipod, and 10-round magazine. Both guns have 24″ fluted, medium-contour barrels, with 1:9″ twist rates. MVP rifles will ship from the factory with sling swivel studs and factory-installed Weaver-style scope bases. Without scope, the MVP varminter weighs roughly 7.25 pounds. Mossberg claims its MVP rifles can deliver “MOA accuracy right from the box!”. We’ll see…

mossmvp03.jpg

MVP Rifles Feature Adjustable Triggers
MVP rifles are fitted with Mossberg’s LBA “Lightning” Adjustable Trigger System, which adjusts from 2 to 7 lbs. pull weight. The LBA trigger, like the Savage Accutrigger, features a central blade that blocks sear movement unless fully depressed.

mossmvp04.png

Nice Laminated Stock with Wide Fore-End
One of the best features of the MVP rifles is the stock, which comes with factory-fitted pillars. Mossberg fitted the MVPs with a nice, laminated stock that should work well either on sandbags or when shot from bipod. To ride the bags better, the fore-end is wider than typical hunting stocks, with a flat bottom. Stippling on the fore-end and pistol grip provide for positive hand placement. We think this stock is a pretty good design for the rifle’s intended uses.

Mossberg Releases MVP Series Rifles
Story by: bob

As we all expected, the National Rifle Association convention has brought forth many new and exciting things for weapons enthusiasts all over the country. Those who weren’t all that interested in political speeches and such were treated to many awesome things. One of them was provided by Mossberg, who decided to use the event to introduce their new range of bolt action rifles. The new range is called the Mossberg MVP Series Varmint, and it has quite a few awesome features which have made some hunters very happy.

The rifles are chambered for the 5.56 mm NATO. The rifles have a weight of 7.5 pounds and a capacity of 10+1, so it has all the power you might expect from a cartridge which was used in all the wars since Vietnam. The barrel is 24 inches and it comes with a superb matte blued finish. The overall length is 43 inches, so nobody can say this is a short rifle.

The hunters who were present at the rifle’s unveiling were overjoyed to find out that there are two available factory combos. First, you can buy a rifle that only comes with a 10 round magazine and Weaver bases which make it a customizer’s delight. Also, if a hunter wants to pay a bit more but get a lot more for his buck, he can choose to buy a rifle which already has a bi-pod and a 4-16x50 mm scope. The first option is available for around $650, while the second one will cost you $100 extra.

At first glance, the rifle looks very good. The stock has a unique model which will undoubtedly satisfy a hunter’s need for a beautiful rifle, and the medium sized barrel looks great, without losing any efficiency. Mossberg fans will be pleased to find out that the Lightning Bolt Action Adjustable Trigger System is implemented, and you can adjust it from 2 to 7 pounds of force with the simple twist of a screwdriver.

The barrel is built to yield maximum performance, as it has a 1:9 twist rate. The thing about this particular Mossberg rifle is that it offers quite a lot, for what could be considered a pretty low price. The rifle is extremely customizable, so it will most likely be able to please any wielder. And to think that this was just one of the many awesome firearms and accessories which were released.

Re: NEW!!!! Mossberg 4x4 Bolt Action Rifle MVP Varmint Preda

Dude, this is pretty awesome!

Re: NEW!!!! Mossberg 4x4 Bolt Action Rifle MVP Varmint Preda

Yea it is pretty awesome. I think this may be my next purchase.

Re: NEW!!!! Mossberg 4x4 Bolt Action Rifle MVP Varmint Preda

Review says "extremely customizable" I wonder how much so...

I do also like the "medium bull barrel".

Re: NEW!!!! Mossberg 4x4 Bolt Action Rifle MVP Varmint Preda

I am trying to source one of these Mossberg 4x4 bolt action rifle MVP as I type this...

Re: NEW!!!! Mossberg 4x4 Bolt Action Rifle MVP Varmint Preda

I'll def be waiting to see if you can get some hands on feed back!

Re: NEW!!!! Mossberg 4x4 Bolt Action Rifle MVP Varmint Preda

Nice.. i'm not to fond of the wood though. i'd like to see some different choices for it.

Re: NEW!!!! Mossberg 4x4 Bolt Action Rifle MVP Varmint Preda

I would prefer a black synthetic stock as well but will see...

Re: NEW!!!! Mossberg 4x4 Bolt Action Rifle MVP Varmint Preda

I feel the same, though it doesnt have to be black. Any of Hogues OM pillar bedded stocks would be cool!

Re: NEW!!!! Mossberg 4x4 Bolt Action Rifle MVP Varmint Preda

I talked to Zia at Hogue Inc. today. She said there is currently nothing in the works for this rifle as its totally brand new. She said they wont have anything go into developement until there is enough support from the consumer base to warrant the R&D.

There are however new stocks about to hit the market for Savage... another story maybe.

Re: NEW!!!! Mossberg 4x4 Bolt Action Rifle MVP Varmint Preda

I would love to have a Hogue stock as an option for the Mossberg 4x4 MVP rifle
