Howdy,
This is a monthly series of questions topic for everyone to join in on the discussion. Some of the later questions may have a poll, and some will not. Don't be shy now, go ahead and post an answer and vote in the polls...

What is your self defense "rule of thumb"?

**Rules**
There is no minimum post requirements.

Well apparently my phone didn't want to post this topic but the software here saved it. I could have sworn it posted.
Ghosts in the machine man...weird.

SA is the most important tool you have. But if you must fight, fight to win, there is no second place in a life of death struggle.

Don't get caught unaware. No surprises, or more importantly, no surprises that cripple or panic you. Watch everything, everybody. Play games in your head to figure out where stuff will come from, i.e. play the bad guy in your head.

Many times self defense is more mental than physical. Make yourself seem bigger, stronger, less vulnerable to any adversary. Keep in mind that this will not always work. If caught, strike back as viciously and completely as possible then get the hell out of the threat area. And know this, if you get caught in an attack IT WILL HURT. Be ready for that. Don't let the pain paralyze you.

You never get to choose the time, place or weather conditions. When you have to perform self defense you will always be at your worst while the attacker usually has the upper hand. Fact of life. The only things you control are preparations before hand:

1) learn to fight. Plenty of quality instruction out there. Lose weight, hit pads, spar. Get that cardio up because adrenaline wipes you out.

2) Carry if you are legally allowed to. If not carry what is legally allowed (knife, mace, stun gun, etc). We are humans and there's a reason we use tools... because it ups our chances for success.

3) With your weapon of choice... see rule one.

When preparation meets opportunity success is attained... Vince Lombardi.

Rule of thumb #1: Always be armed.
Rule of thumb #2: Stay away from areas where things are likely to go south.
Rue of thumb #3: When Rule #2 fails, refer to Rule # 1.

Be the last one shooting.

Historical - "don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes" - Israel "Old Put" Putnam at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
