DHS is buying 750 million rounds of ammo in addition to the 450 million rounds of 40 cal. hollow points they purchased earlier this year. If it was military procurment I could understand it but that's a lot of ammo for this particular agancy. The media went wild that regular people can buy 6000 rounds of ammo via mail order but are strangley quiet on this one.

Yup, ive seen the same info.

Its also worth mentioning the DHS hasn't used that much ammo in their 10 years of existence. Also made note of is that this stuff isn't training ammo. Departments and agencies don't tend to practice with JHP ammo. The 40 Cal is almost exclusively an American agency thing as well as being popular with law enforcement agencies among state and local departments. It isn't purchased to be sent to units overseas.

First of all, there goes the price of ammunition ... again.

Secondly, I'm not even happy that there is a DHS. We have/had a perfectly good CIA and a perfectly good FBI, long before another department was added. Personally, I think the CIA and FBI could get the job done, without more "help". Take care. Tom Worthington.

According to the last census, there are 314,157,251 people who reside in the U.S.

And they want to buy 450, 000,000 rounds of ammunition.

    Nice.

John A., the total ammo purchase for the year will be over a billion...close to 3 rounds of ammo per person per your census number.

Tom396, I agree on DHS. I think they were started because the FBI and CIA had a lot of info. on the 9/11 hijackers but didn't connect the dots and stop it. DHS was suppose to stop that. No we have 3+ groups that may not share information or connect the dots.

That is what we were told, they were supposed to be the bridge between the two depts. Like any other gov. agency their powers have grown vastly beyond the scope of what they were created to do.

I don't understand the logic behind purchasing that much ammunition.

Where is the congressional oversight committee :?:

Thinking back to the days after 9/11, I know that I wondered if more cells were hiding among us. I think DC wanted to show us that they found the problem (had info. and didn't connect the dots) and they had the solution (DHS). If the bloated bureaucracy didn't stop it, make it more bloated.

DHS didn't stop an illegal alien from operating a flight school this year or 25 illegals from attending it. A local policeman solved that one. They seem more intent on harassing an old lady trying take nail polish onto a plane, having reports made that strict Constitutionalists are potential terrorists, spying on Facebook or stockpiling ammo. Great question, where is the oversight????

OK, it looks like the 40 S&W is pretty magical as of late.

This is one time I really have to ask myself WTF?

Why does the weather service need to purchase ammunition in the first place?

I strongly dislike conspiracy theories, but C'mon.

That jumped out at me as well.

Part of my frustration with the current administration stems from the fact that there doesn't seem to be any oversight on any of this stuff? :x

They are saying that the ammo for the weather service was a mistake and that it's for the Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement. Did anyone ever hear of them? What do they do that the Coast Guard doesn't? At least they have the name "enforcement" in their title. I think every agency now has their own armed enforcement group and HRT team.

"Due to a clerical error in the federal business vendor process, a solicitation for ammunition and targets for the NOAA Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement mistakenly identified NOAA’s National Weather Service as the requesting office. The error is being fixed and will soon appear correctly in the electronic federal bidding system. The ammunition is standard issue for many law enforcement agencies and it will be used by 63 NOAA enforcement agents in their twice annual target qualifications and training.

    Nope, never heard of them.

And besides the coast guard, what about the US Fish and Wildlife?

Why so many small redundant agencies?

    Anything to do with:

Re: DHS buys 750 million rounds of ammo

Confirmed that the social security administration requested 174,000 rounds of 357 SIG ammunition

I understand they have armed guards at their office locations (although I think they're contracted out) and they do have some special investigators.

But all of the Gov agencies purchasing ammo almost simultaneously, makes me stop and ask myself why

These obscure, armed departments caught my interest so I looked around some tonight. I found out that the Department of Education has a law enforcement group and, get this, they have 27 Brand "R" shotguns.

Here's a wiki list of armed federal agencies. How about the National Zoological Park Police, Amtrak Police or the Railroad Retirement Board?

Re: DHS buys 750 million rounds of ammo

    On the topic of the civilian national security force;

With so many agencies purchasing ammo, one would have to assume it is being ordered for firearms. Bear with me as I think this through...

We already have a national volunteer military. We have the National Gaurd and Reserves too. A civilian security force sounds like a militia to me, but the word militia carries a certain stigmatism with it to many. I mention firearms above, and everything I have heard from the liberal left indicates they certainly do not want a "well regulated militia" Something about firearms in the hands of citizens that scares the crap out of them.

Still bringin it all together here... Ok, so they need ammunition, for lots of firearms, but not civie owned firearms, though BHO spoke a couple times about a Civie National Security Force. So enter all these stupid and/or redundant agencies. The Retired Railroad Board? Zoological Scociety? NOAA Fisheries? Why do any of these need their own security force? Is it the Civilian national blah blah blah bein implemented?

    Heck I dunno.

I have seen 3 general theories on the 1 billion plus ammo purchase by DHS.

    1) prepping for civil unrest
    2) drive up ammo prices/reduce availability
    3) Obama civilian corps

The most popular seems to be coming civil unrest.

    Only time will tell.
