Reading the news today it certainly appears we're on the path relaxing these draconian restrictions and restarting the economy. Let's hope so. We need to put our folks back to work now.

Hope everyone will think long and hard before buying any more Chinese goods! I certainly plan to examine labels on products and buy American!

Think this represents a good strategy. What do you think?

I feel that the "stimulus" that has been/will be given to people, "easy" unemployment benefits and "stay at home" orders will do more to negatively affect recovery and create more people dependent on government support. The manic panic is at this point, unbearable. As a Libertarian Capitalist, I am all for opening up the country so people can get back to work. I am a believer in "Herd Immunity"--people going about their normal business and most not being affected by CV at all, a tiny % getting sick, and an even smaller % passing from the virus. It is callous to think these people would have died of "something" anyway and I am guilty of believing that for the greater good of the entire country...

We are self-employed and do not qualify for unemployment bennies and make too much to get food stamps. Fortunately, my vendors and most businesses are selling and buying still. Inconveniently, early store closure hours are cramping this night owl's productivity... :( I AM the guy riding the shopping cart through WM at 2am... ;)

We rely on power tools made in China. We have plenty of stock to last until June/July. I will probably replenish stock next month just in case... I would prefer to use US made goods if they were available, and firmly believe this "crisis" should be the wakeup call to make the USA a manufacturing giant once again. Especially in the interest of national security! :)

I agree on all points Bobster. Even the callous part, cuz as you know from the virus thread I'm very concerned about my Dad's health. However, this really starts getting into the nanny state mentality and the colossal lack of personal responsibility being displayed everywhere and not just due to this pandemic. The growing dependence on the government is just a symptom of a sick society, from rampant narcissism to a neutered manufacturing sector and a population who would rather vacation now and pay later. Our governments and in my opinion malevolent corporations support this numbskull thinking and are more than happy to oblige in picking up your responsibilities through technology and monitoring. All under the guise of making your life easier..."let us do the work while you go to the beach, it'll just cost you a little liberty, that's all."

This pandemic SHOULD be a huge wake-up call to both of our countries with respect to domestic manufacturing...this is a massive failure of our governments and us by proxy.

I'm willing to do what is necessary to protect my Dad/family from the disease at this point but as many strong people that can weather contracting the virus the better. Hoping for a vaccine sooner rather than later.

Yup... I DEMAND to see shovel-ready jobs by the summer! "Lost your job sweeping the pristine sidewalks at Disney? You get to work on this road crew repairing our aging infrastructure if you want to collect a check..." Think WPA for the new millennia.

I looked at the VIN of a 09 VW Routan in the junkyard the other day. VIN begins with a "2". Spoiler alert: the minivan is a rebadged Chrysler product.

Hope your family stays healthy. I have an uncle I need to contact--is about the only "elder" left in my family...

There are so many reasons why manufacturers left the US. But here is the elephant in the room that I have noticed over the years.
Here are a few huge points of why we are in such a piss poor shape as it is. And every single one of them caused by an inept, incompetent and corrupt government (There I said it).

    Corporate taxes.

    Off balance trade agreements

Cheaper wages and living costs in other countries

regulations from so many government agencies that are not elected and basically have no oversight and exist wholly regardless of who is in the executive office seat that operate outside of government making their own regulations that have the rule of law even without it being a law.

    Judicial system/laws/lawyers

I believe what you're referring to is a bureaucratic dictatorship.

I watched Mark Steyn giving a talk a number of years ago where he got into the whole idea of what a bureaucratic dictatorship is...it is as you've described above. Un-elected government "servants" who are answerable not to voters, but to another un-elected official. It might take ten, 20 or even more jumps in the chain before you find any sign of an elected representative. This is a sickness in our "democracies" and it infects ALL western nations...without exception.

Edit: I will try to find a link somewhere, I've tried before without much luck though.

The above link to an article (the audio isn't working) isn't the presentation I saw, but seems to pretty much cover it all.

That does sum up exactly what I was referring to. I hadn't thought about it in those specific terms, but that's it.

Until about 2 years ago I had never heard that term either. But once you understand it, you see it at work everywhere. It is part of what spurs me to write to my elected representatives. Sometimes it is just out of sheer outrage for what is nothing less than the long, horrible demise of our liberty. A hard fought battle soaked in the blood of those who went before us and so many ungrateful now who are begging to have that very gift taken from them and everyone else.

Bureaucratic dictatorship in my opinion is what led to the Trump impeachment and this latest whistleblower from HHS. They are entrenched and do not like someone (even the president) rocking what they perceive to be their boat.

Time will tell how wise this urgency to "reopen" proves to be. It's a shame we still have a president saying idiotic things to the American people like, "The virus will just go away without a vaccine."

He has a lot of competition with the other side. He is an egomaniac. The dems are just assholes, attempting to turn this country into a full welfare state by flooding the country with even more money than the President did. One side gives money to help. The dems give money to use as bait.

If the Dems were to get control the way we live now would become the norm. At least until the revolution was over.
