Shotguns: non-Mossberg

Re: Savage/Stevens SXS .410

Well I got a chance to take a real good look at the .410 double, it was a savage 311, I was stoked! It was looking good until I noticed something that didn't look quite right. Somebody had went to work on the muzzle with a file, it was lopsided and crooked as a dog hind leg! That took some of the wind outta my sails.

I did score on a super nice Ithaca featherlight 12 ga, with two barrels, so it wasn't a total wash.

Re: Savage/Stevens SXS .410

#1. That totally SUX!

#2. SCORE! The ithacas are really nice and I cant count how many times i hear stories about how old the guns are and still in service! You'll love it! Now go check out Ithaca Owners !!!

Re: Savage/Stevens SXS .410

I visit the Ithaca boards but not as frequently as Mossberg tho. May stop by and say hi!

Here's one for you, Charles Daly, OU, NIB, the plant in Turkey that built the shotgun went out of business in 2006, Imported by KBI who went out of business in 2010.

Guess that lifetime warranty isn't worth the paper it was written on. Ah well thats the way it goes. Looks like Numrich bought up the CD parts inventory and Brownells offers replacement parts for the high wear items. So not all is lost. :)

Absolutely awesome Doc...what a fine looking firearm !!

remington wingmaster

so the lady and i are lookin for a longer shotgun for trap/skeet type shooting...and i can see some hunting as well in my future...while i was at the LGS with my buddy yesterday they had an old used (in great shape) remington 870 wingmaster on consignment...is there anyway to tell what vintage it is? the stock/forearm had the typical cross hatch but it had this really cool factory spade patern to it at the ends and along the sides of the grip section...kinda curious what year it might be? i didnt think to ask while i was there.

as for what we want...i know we want 870 or 500, wood furniture, long barrel, adj choke...really i've been looking for one with furniture that stands out...the price was $295 which seemed a little steep to me; how does gun cosigning work? can i make an offer for less? if so what seems fair?

Re: remington wingmaster

Can you offer less?

ALWAYS!

$275 for a used Wingmaster a good deal?

ALWAYS!

The Spade pattern is something that Remington Uses and has used for MANY years.
Dating a gun by that will not be acurate since funiture on pump guns get changed ALL the time.

The only way to acurately date a gun is by its serial number.

If the barrel on the Wingmaster has a rib and screw in chokes then I would be all over it for that price.

Re: remington wingmaster

it's not a vent-rib, just plain beadsight...i'll call em about some more specific specs...to look up a serial number would i just call remington? and thanks about that spade pattern, i've just never seen it before except in some pics that were of 60s/70s shotties so i assumed it was and older thing.

i thought all remington 870 were screw in choke? i'll hafta look into that when i call.

Re: remington wingmaster

Barrels are available everywhere for 870's
Many people hunt with plain barrels (no ribs) but when it comes to Trap & Skeet, a rib is the norm on target guns.

Re: remington wingmaster

In all seriousness, and in spite of my preference for Mossberg pump shotguns, I would be all over a walnut stocked machined receiver higher quality Wingmaster for that price. I wouldn't even try to talk them down.

Re: remington wingmaster

At that price, Buy it!!!!

I've had a 870 for many many years and put many 1000's of rounds through it. It's only been fairly recently that I've been picking up Mossbergs.

Re: remington wingmaster

damn, and here i was thinking that seemed a bit steep for a used 870

i agree nitesite...i have a very strong mossberg preference BUT the 500s feel flimsy to me (esp compared to my 590 and the 870s) the things i dislike about remingtons i dont think would be much of an issue for sport shooting...which would be the safety location and that stupid feed ramp thats always down and in my way

Re: remington wingmaster

Robtech,

Remeber this still may have 870 stamped on it, but it also has WINGMASTER on it.
That puts it head and shoulders above any 870 Express.

From what I have come to understand is that the 870 Wingmaster gets that extra finish and polish in assembly that the Express does not....I cannot confirm this but it makes sense.

Re: remington wingmaster

Wingmaster = receiver machined from bar stock steel. Cut checkering.

Express = stamped steel receiver. Pressed in checkering.

Both work but the difference in quality is night and day. Forgetting the fancy scrollwork and other cosmetics, it's simply a better shotgun. Like I said, I wouldn't even try to talk him down.

Re: remington wingmaster

Consignments usually work when the owner of the weapon wants to place a firearm for sale in a gun shop or range so that as many people as possible who are in the market may see the firearm. The owner usually sets a price and the gun shop or range adds a percentage to that price. The shop owner will ask the owner if he has a bottom line price, a lowest offer price per say, so as to not let the firearm linger if the owner wants to sell fast. You can make an offer and see if the owner will take it...but either way, the shop keeper will get his percentage.

Having said that...if you don't buy it...I will !! ;)
