It is and drives me crazy.
Not only does it infuriate me, but to hear them talk about "regional jobs" makes me shake my head.
By that, they mean, we're putting all the new jobs in our district and you can drive from different counties to come to them if you want work.
It really hits home when you have your kids graduate from high school and they have to move away because there is no work. That's the part that breaks my heart the worst.
That's what makes me want to smack the SOB right between the eyes every time he starts talking about it during all these SOAR meetings (which are usually held in Pikeville and is basically inviting new businesses and ideas to their towns.
I've nothing specifically against that, but it's just the whole better than you thing that grabs me right by the craw.
I will say, we have had two major movies be filmed in downtown Harlan the last couple of years, and not counting the whole Justified series that was BASED in Harlan but only the opening scenes were actually filmed here. The producers of the show did come to town a couple of times and were treated well, which I think has opened up being the center of a couple of movies.
The main reason for having a lot of scenes shot here though is because the town has remained virtually unchanged for the past 40 years.
I admit it was pretty cool seeing all the Tractor and Trailers coming into town with props and clothes and lights and cameras and other gear with wires strewn around everywhere.
