This is what happens from drilling too-brittle imported steel with too-soft imported drill bits.

A Vermont-American bit would have snapped every time. I have never ever done this but I have snapped 100 drill bits.
 
That picture does not exaggerate the fact that the bit bent more than 90 degrees.

It's not cracked either.

I suspect that just didn't get heat-treated well.
 
Never had one do that but I have had a lot of them just break, even bigger bits that should never break drilling what I was drilling. Cheap metals and/or poor hardening.
 
I hate breaking off a bit while really deep into the workpiece.

You should send that set back.
