702 Plinkster vs Ruger 10/22 - anyone own both?

I want to get a conventional semi auto .22LR rifle. Not one of the newer AR style guns, but one that looks like "grandpa's old varmint gun" I'm going blind watching YT vids with reviews of both the Plinksters and the Ruger counterparts. So far it looks like the Ruger might have the edge on reliability, but I was curious if anyone still on the forum here has either owned or used both brands of .22LR. I guess we could include Savage in here too. I see a lot of those as well.

As always, any feedback [of a constructive nature ;)] is appreciated.
 
I have both. They both are good, reliably, accurate rifles. Last time I looked you can purchase the 702 really cheap. I have not had good luck with 25 round mags on the 702. The 10 round mags are fine. Faster reloads than the Ruger rotary mags if that means anything. You can easily mount a scope to the 702 as well.
 
No threaded barrel on either. I dug up this photo from 2 or 3 years ago. I did put an MCARBO trigger spring in it for a slightly better trigger pull. I purchased the rifle and scope together as a package for like $130 bucks or so. The scope is not the best but at 50 yards it does the job.IMG_0737.jpeg
 
Husker88, don't a 702 but do have a Ruger 10/22 and have had no problems with it.

They do make a threaded barrel adapter for the 10/22 which works well. See attached picture. There are several manufactures but think most are the same. If I remember right the thread is 1/2 x 28.

Well...I succumbed to a special offer via Palmetto State Armory and ordered a Rossi R22-TB [threaded barrel]. $129. So even with their fees and the FFL delivery fee [$30 at a new shop in town, which I thought reasonable] the end cost is still lower than Academy Sports and others. The significant thing about the PSA offer is that they even HAD this rifle. Everyplace else that I looked was out of stock.

The irony is that if I end up getting a suppressor for this one, it will likely cost 3X what the rifle cost, what with the tax to ATFE. Maybe I'll use a soda bottle like in the movies!!!! :laugh:

At the last (and my first) "Public Day" I RSOed at my range, there were a couple there with the Rossi rifle like yours, a BP pistol and a couple Heritage .22 SA revolvers one with pink accents for her and the other had the Mag cylinder installed. Apparently they are "regulars" to the once-a-month event. In talking with them afterwards, these guns are what they can afford on their budget and one can't fault them for that. :) Props to them for getting out there and shooting on a regular basis. :) I'll ask them how they like the rifle--I do recall the lady was shooting decent groups at 50'.
 
I noticed that when looking for extra magazines, the ones for the Rossi RS22 also fit the Mossberg 702 Plinkster. Hmmm.
