Hey, all
I'm playing with the idea of making a do it all "United States of Zombieland" tactical shotgun, and I thought the 835 would be the best platform to build upon for the following reasons:
1. It can chamber shells from 2.75" to 3.00" and 3.5" in length
2. It's built like a tank and has the same thick walled type barrel sported by the 590A1 (based upon what I have read regarding the interchangeability of the 835 and 590 barrels -corrections are welcome).
3. It has the same magazine tube assembly of the 590A1 -allowing extensions and easier cleaning than the 500/535 variety
However, after some research on the Mossberg website and several forums, it appeared that there were a couple of drawbacks:
1. the 835® Overbore (.775) vs. Standard 12 Gauge Bore (.731):
*****I wanted the ability to use one barrel to fire slugs as well as shot.
2. Lack of availability of a "security" 18.5" length barrel of any type.
*****I wanted to minimize weight and maximize maneuverability for this gun since it is a pretty heavy model, already.
Then, after some more searching, I found the following information which I hope is helpful to others in pursuit of a beefed up custom built HD 835:

Irelander over at Shotgunworld.com forums had been doing similar research and got this response from a Maverick Arms rep:
"Thank you for your e-mail. We apologize for the delay in answering your e-mail. We have the following barrel available for the model 835:
Item # Description Price
12946 835 12 ga 18 1/2" Cylinder Bore w/bead sight, blue finish $100.00
Since this is a barrel that we do not get asked for frequently, it may take us some time to get this barrel for you. Should you have any questions please feel free to contact us directly at 1-800-363-3555, ext 541.

I called for some clarification on 23 Jan 2009. The #12946 is a true cylinder bore, smoothbore barrel, NOT AN OVERBORED BARREL, and both slugs and shotshells can be fired through it. The #12946 can be ordered parkerized for $20 extra.

18.5" barrel with 3-1/2" chamber: Part#90823 (I think these only come in the blue finish) They are around $110.00. Mossberg does not advertise these on their site. You have to contact Customer Service to order one. I got mine on GunBroker for around $80.00...

I called Maverick Arms again and barrel #12946 is the same as #90823, which is the part number of this barrel when it is sold to stores in clamshell packaging.
