sethlarney, regarding your question on power for deer hunting I've always found a 3-9x power adequate.
However, if you are hunting in deep woods and brush especially in low light conditions you might be better served by a fixed power scope. Fixed power scopes tend to be better in low light conditions. Atleast that's my experience over many decades.
Variable power is good but as we get older clarity and the ability to capture light are equally if not more important than magnification.
