Anyone ever own a blued 590?

Happy Sunday all,

Was watching clip from older Hickok45 video, noticed the 590 he has has a blued finish and chrome bolt/lifter. Seems like this version was offered in the past, with a heat shield too. Must have been removed on the example he picked up, was a police trade-in after all.

Any of y’all ever own one like this? I go back and forth on whether I like the blued finish or parkerized/matte finish more on Mossbergs. I do miss that the newer blued guns no longer have chrome bolts and lifters though.

Maverick, while I'm not sure of the specific model I know that several of us have removed the original dark finish from both the bolt and the lifter.

There was a time that you could get "unfinished" chrome lifters from Mossberg. Not sure if that is still the case.

Hey Ernst, sorry to revive an old thread. what’s the easiest way to remove the original dark finish on them? Contemplating buying a new Maverick 88 possibly so the possibility has got me curious if it’s not too difficult. Thanks

I think there are three methods:

Chemical - there are some commercial products but you might try acetone or white vinegar and steel wool and once done neutralize with WD40

Commercial products:
BirchWood Casey Rust and Blue Remover
Naval Jelly

Sandpaper - just be careful with too heavy of a grit and sand with the "grain" of the bolt. Probably start with 400 grit and try a small area.

Heat - heat gun will soften the finish and wipe with a rag. Likely will take several heat cycles to get it all off

Once you get the finish off you can polish with very fine sandpaper or 0000 steel wool and a little WD40

Hope ths helps but I'd try a small section as a test.
