Anyone Planning to Build a Short Barreled Shotgun or Rifle?

Given the $200 "tax" on short barreled and/or modified rifles and shotguns goes away on January 1st do any of you have plans to mofify an existing firearms?

I know several Shockwave owners who in the past have expressed a desire to add a shoulder stock to their current weapon.

I think with the admin's current "indecision" on the matter, I would probably wait before I got out the hacksaw. ;) Ideally, they would make the NFA go away but the Republicans are f*cking p*ssies! :(

I just found this thread, so I'm late to the party but...

I've been thinking about it. I'm not entirely clear on the process, or the correct form(s) - but I'd love to put a TactaLoad Flash 5 on my Shockwave.

The process, as I understand, is as follows:

1. Determine Your Filing Method
Individual: You apply for the tax stamp in your name.
NFA Gun Trust: This allows multiple people to use the SBR without being present.

2. Complete the Required ATF Form
Form 1: If you are making your own SBR.
Form 4: If you are purchasing an existing SBR.

3. Gather Necessary Documentation
Fingerprint Cards: Required for background checks.
Passport Photos: One 2"x2" photo is needed.
Chief Law Enforcement Officer Notification: Notify your local law if required

4. I think the form can be subbmitted electronically and the other material mailed.

You should be able to go online to verify the process and requirements.

I have a friend who submitted in early January and got his approval about a week ago.

Regards

If you plan to add a full stock to your Shockwave you do need to get a SBS approval.

I think it all depends on how you plan to use it. For me, I'm very happy with the original configurations.

Regards

Thank you, Ernst!

I like the Shockwave as it is, but I'd like to have the SBS option with the additional rounds in the stock. For now, I'm just kicking around the idea, but I might go for it since it's now free to file.

Mark, well with your side saddle you certainly have additional rounds available already.

Just one observation regarding shell placeemnt in the side saddle. I've found over the years that I can combat load the gun faster if the majority of the shell are brass down. I normally pull two rounds straight down and thumb them in without ever taking the gun off the target area.

However, I do leave a single shell, typically the forward one brass up just in case i need to do an over the top emergency reload.

I do use tearoff shot cards so I carry additional loaded cards with either 00 buck or slugs.

Regards

LOL! I do too. I unloaded the Shockwave and removed the side saddle rounds to install the BOP, and when I decided to take the pics, I just jabbed the shells into the side saddle without thinking. Normally, they would've been brass down. I was too lazy to take more photos and hoping nobody would notice.

Mark, Thumbs Up!

Not sure if you've also modified your loading port but getting rid of the sharp edges all around and taking off part of the forward end to make an extended ramp will really facilitate speed loading and certainly better on your thumb. File works wonders!

CLEO Notification is not optional. They must always be notified for ever form submitted. There is no requirement for them to respond, so best to send it delivery receipt required or certified if mailing, so you have proof of delivery.

If you're buying anything on a Form 4, your dealer takes care of submission of fingerprints, photo, and CLEO Notification. Also, all of those can be submitted electronically. The only one that must be mailed is paper fingerprint cards but getting an EFT file of your prints that you can use over and over is the smart move.

There's no point to do paper forms anymore with existence of the ATF's eForm site. Paper forms also take significantly (2-3x or more) longer to be approved.

I have multiple SBR & suppressors from before the stamp was eliminated. Waiting on two (2) Form 4 to be approved for more suppressors currently. Monday will be a month for the first stamp. The last form that I did last year was approved in 3 days. As long as it isn't nearly a year like my first handful of forms.

Thanks for that. It's good to know the possible wait times with these things.

Anyone got any thoughts on a gun trust?

Also with an NFA Trust, anyone who you want to be able to use the NFA item if you are not present must be named co-trustees of the trust, not just beneficiaries.

Trusts aren't as convenient as they once were, so it depends on your use case.

For NFA items only you are allowed access to them if you buy them as an individual. If your wife/brother/friend/adult child has the combo to your gun safe, you can't legally store your NFA items in the same safe. You also couldn't loan it to them to use for the day/etc unless you're physiclaly there with them.

With an NFA Trust, anyone that's on the trust as a trustee or co-trustee or responsible person can have unsupervised access to where the items are store and can store/use the items without you being present. However, anyone that is listed on the trust must submit fingerprints, photo, and 4473 for every Form 1/4 submitted and all are subject to NCIS background check. The form approval will be held until everyone receives a proceed status from the FBI and if anyone is denied the form will be rejected.

It used to be that an NFA trust didn't require fingerprints - which was the main advantage - but they did away with that some time ago.

I stayed completely out of this as absolutely none of it applies to California. We have our own Draconian rules that somebody’s going to have to erase.

I think the California department of justice has just decided that the federal government can go suck eggs, and until enough people get fed up to fix that we’re kind of screwed here.
