Nice shots. But what is that on the side of the tree in shot # 37? Too big for a weasel. Ferret? Hunting season looks promising though.

The small critter in the pics is a Pine Martin

This is a bruin that one of the other hunters up there was able to tag. At close to 320 pounds this is one BIG MI black bear.

Great pics MikeD.

I had never seen or heard of a pine martin and was wondering what it was too, so I looked it up on wiki after I read your reply because I enjoy learning about stuff like that. We dont' have them farther due south and is one reason why I enjoy reading and seeing game cam pics from across the country.

You have some really good pics and a good assortment of wild life on that property. That tells me that you and your family (and surrounding property owners) are managing it well. [thumbs up]

The 320 pounder is a decent size bear no matter where you are. I think the average size (wild) black bear, is about 275 lb, but during years where they have a lot to eat, obviously can get a lot bigger. I think they should be very happy about it.

Since you live in a state where you can hunt them, I understand seeing one that big would be unusual. Most of ours are at least that size, but as you know, our hunting season is limited to 2 days at the start of winter when only a few are going to be tagged anyway and the season is still in a lot more advantage to the bear.

If we were allowed a fair season two weeks long toward the beginning or middle of fall, I have no doubts that we would have some on the books weighing well over 450 lbs here. I have personally seen one that I estimate close to 600 pounds in my yard. It was nearly as long as love seat and two grown men wouldn't be able to wrap their arms around it in the midsection. I'm not going to lie to you about it, I was trembling when I got in the house.

I think I may have posted these here somewhere before but here are a couple pine marten video's from my hunting trips last year. (Note that both of these videos were made using the camera i attemped to use on my gun mount this year. :D )

In this one he is eating from a jar of peanut butter screwed to a tree. The deer ignored it but the marten couldn't get enough.
