Deer Season 2012

I have been out the last two days. Took a break today though. I have seen six so far. One 2 X 2 and one nice 2 X 3 but let them pass. The third point on the 2 X 3 was more of a nub anyway. Good size though. Blacktail Mulie hybred maybe. Definately larger. The 2X was small. Typical Coastal Blacktail with a beautiful chocolate colored pelt. I figured he'd dress out at maybe 105 tops.

But what I was kind of disappointed in, is this one Doe came by yesterday with a button buck in tow. I figure that was her fawn from last year she hasn't kicked to the curb yet which means the Doe out here probably aren't even in Estrus yet.

At this point it's just wait and see if that 3x or 4X walk by my stand or settle closer to the end of the season for one of the younger bucks. Because they don't seem to be interested in the opposit sex yet. Maybe it's because it's still so warm. It has been in the mid 80's all week. Hopefully it will cool down next week. We'll see.

Hunting tip #1 - Mineral licks on the cheap

Instead of spending $15+ for trophy rocks, etc at the sporting goods store go to TSC or some other farm supply store and buy a mineral block. I just bought two 50 pound blocks for $6 each at TSC.

It took me about 30 minutes to break them apart into small pieces with an air hammer and dump into two 5 gallon buckets. Ready to take to my hunting spot.

I had a pretty good day on the 2nd day of the gun season. I hunt public lands (D. Crockett National Forest) in east Texas and set up along a trail that I've hunted for some time now. In the morning the deer come up from the south heading for their bedding areas. In the afternoon and early evening they move from north to south heading for oak tree groves and farms along the national forest boundry.

About 12:30 that day, I spotted a doe jumping across the creek on the other side of the clearing in front of me. I stood up to see if anything was following her and low and behold, an 8 point was sniffing up behind her. As my wife would tell me later that day, "men are so predictable". I made some clicking sounds, and when he stopped to see what that weird noise was, I got him with my 4x4. It took a while to get him back to the road, but I got abount 90 lbs of meat in my freezer from him.

30-06

Good ol 30-06... It's a great caliber and probably kills more deer than any other. I was hoping you we're goin to say 7mm rem as I'm interested in knowing how much it tears up the deer.

Our rifle season starts here Monday after thanksgiving. I've got my .243 zeroed in and ready for action. Saw a few good bucks around through archery season and I'm hoping with the longer range of my rifle that ill get one o em.

Yeah, I also like a 30-06. I had a Remington 7400 in it, but was hurt and had to down size considerably.

I agree. I went to a farm feed store and picked up two small mineral blocks for $3.00 each. Walmart here started putting the exact same thing in their hunting section and wanted $7.00 each for them.

I recently bought a 50 lb brown trace mineral block from a local feed/grain store and it was $9. Walmart had a small block about the size of a house brick for $5, although admittedly, it had some kind of apple flavoring in it.

A 50 lb block typically lasts me about 9 months to a year depending on usage and rain/snowfall.

What do you guys do with the.mineral block when season starts?

Sent from behind the hood of a long nose pete.

Every state I know of has different laws.

Mine says (paraphrasing) that I can't have feed in/near the area from within 2 weeks prior to season start, nor at any time during season. And since modern gun is the last of the hunting seasons of the year (youth, black powder, archery and then modern gun), you'd essentially not be able to use feed for almost 2 months or so before rifle season started.

But a mineral block is not considered feed where I live.

I think mostly because logical thinking says that even if the mineral block were removed, if it had been there for any lengthy period of time, the minerals would seep into the ground from rain run off, where they would still be active regardless.

There is a large hole surrounding where I keep my block where the salt seeps into the ground where various animals stomp the ground and busts up the dirt and licks and eat it too.

Also, remember that I hunt on private property. There may be other laws concerning that on public access land, but they wouldn't relate to my situation anyway. But nevertheless, I still need to put out the new block. My old one has been gone for quite some time.

245lbs 8 point buck. Taken with a .243 by my neighbor on his land where I turkey hunt!

That's a huge buck.....

Congrats to your neighbor. That is a very good looking deer.

My 9 year old son's first deer hunt, opening day of Indiana's shotgun season.
Ready to see some deer,

After seeing 14 and not getting any shots. (He needs to practice more before I let him shoot very far)

I see he's already mastering one of the most common deer hunting skills.

Rip, that's a monster. Congrats to your neighbor.

Here are a few short videos I've gotten of deer. Nothing spectacular but it's what I've been seeing.
