DIY Trigger Job & action smoothing w/ Results

Bathrobeman

.270 WIN
I’ve had Mcarbo trigger springs in my 88 for several years now and the trigger was ok, but still had room for improvement or so I hoped. The action wasn’t bad but I wanted to clean it up too.
So I tore it apart and got to sanding. I used 1k up to 3k grit and pretty much every piece that comes apart. Every piece, bolt, bolt slide, elevator, action bars, and everything that is inside the trigger assy (sear, etc.)
With out the DIY job and Mcarbo springs the trigger pull weight was around 5 lbs. After the DIY polish it was down to a little over 3 lbs.
The action is now “expensive gun” smooth or smoother. The biggest places to look at are the action bars and the elevator. If your gun is well used you’ll see some rub marks on the inside of the elevator where it rubs the bolt. Smooth that down. Do anything that feels rough and or you can tell has been rubbing.

A word of caution though, putting the trigger group back together is not for the faint of heart. It’s pretty tough, I almost gave up and took it to someone.

I finally got to shoot the ‘Ole Mav since I did the “trigger job.” I’m not one to toot my own horn, but “toot toot!” it’s pretty good. 3.5 or so lb pull weight with no malfunctions, hard to beat that. The MCARBO springs and “non polished” trigger group was ok, but this is quite a bit better than that even.
The action is bunches smoother after the polishing and there weren’t any feeding or ejection issues.
I Guinea pigged, so now y’all get the MCARBO spring set and break out the sand paper and get after it.
