What traditional foods do you and your family eat on New Year's for good luck?

For us the long tradition has been Black Eyed Peas, Cornbread and a Green Leafy Vegetable plus Pork

Good question. I have never had what would be called a traditional , or maybe special meal to start the new year. I do remember that after I left for the service my folks got together with a group of friends for years and they would have pork, sauerkraut, and black eyed peas on New Year’s Eve. They did that for some 25 years until they moved out of state.

This week, New Year’s Eve, the old folks home, which I affectionately refer to as the minimum security facility, lunch that day will be stewed black eyed peas with ham, collard greens, and cornbread. We’ll see how the preparation goes.

Either way I am going to enjoy the day, and I hope you all do as well.

We've never had any New Year traditions in our household, but when I was a kid, my dad's birthday was January 1st. So there was always some type of celebratory feast that day.

However.....dad grew up on a farm in Princeton, Indiana, and he would relish things that had the rest of us ready to puke. I still remember the smell when he put an entire beef tongue in the oven roaster to slow cook for his birthday. Calves brains, or "sweetbreads" as he called them, were also a favorite. He was born in 1918, so growing up in depression era rural America meant very limited food choices.

Husker, my mom used to boil beef tongue when I was a kid. She would bring it to a boil, I forget how long she would bring it to a boil, the let it simmer for a while. I always liked it myself. Now liver, which my mother loved, no way was that going down my throat, lol.

We go to Cousin Lulu’s for traditional Mexican new year food. Plus she’s from the American south, so there’s black-eyed peas and trotters.

Nopales, menudo, BBQ tri tip, grilled salmon, ponche, salsa fresca, beer, etc.

@Caddmann, what are trotters ? I am not familiar with that name.
Meany, we'll see what Cadd says but trotters as I remember are pigs feet.

How was your New Year's Eve dinner with all the southwest traditional food. Collard Greens are good is fixed right with a little bacon grease drizzled over the top.

Happy New Year!

I know Puerto Ricans that LOVE them! (insert vomit emoji here) Just remember the average institutionally-prepared pig spends its life stomping about in its own sh*t!
