Hog Hunting

Hog hunting...

This morning me and a buddy of mine took my newly acquired Mossberg ATR 100 30.06 out hog hunting. We stalked this hog for about a half mile. When we got about a hundred yards away from him, I took a shot at him, first I heard the bang from the rifle, then the thud of the 180 grain bullet slamming into him and then the hog screaming. I then saw the hog limping away and took another shot, this time he dropped. We started to walk towards him and as we got about 20 yards away from him, he lifted his head, which gave me a clear shot at his neck, I took the shot and he was down for good... One 250lbs hog...

Should be good eating if it has been on the corn for a while,

Forgive this Yankee's ignorance...they aren't good eating if they are feeding on other things? We may have a few feral hogs in PA but I don't know of anyone that has seen one up here. Hog hunting sounds like a real good time though.

Actually all we took were the backstraps. I'm not sure if it's true or not, but I've been told that it's not recommended you eat these hogs during the summer months due to them having worms.

Might just be that there are a few differences in the environmental conditions between our respective hunting areas, last one I dropped in the stubble was fine eating, 25 yards, .22LR, eye to ear, even a bush boar is taken out for food, as a good rule of thumb, if it looks alright then it most likely is. Biggest risk would be if anyone heard that you had left one behind. Kiwi pig hunters can get a little passionate about their religion, oops, sorry sport. Try a 200+kg boar a couple of good dogs and just a knife, tends to get the system going.

I'm on 6+ thousand acres of crop fields and taking anyone of these beast out ofthe game is good for the crops. I have no problem dragging one of these off to feed the birds and coyotes...

hey bones i just spotted your signature.....
i was an old swabby myself. :)

Hey guys new to the site and really liking it. I took a boar with my ATR 100 30-06 this past weekend. It was my first kill ever. It's weight was 96 lbs. It was great experience. I have the hog on ice, taking it to get processed this evening.

Welcome to the forum from NY. Congrats on your first hog.

Glad you are enjoying the site.

At the present date, our wild boar hunting group have hunted 14 boars since he first day of season.
The best trophy was taken with a semiauto shotgun rifled barrel using Remington Accutip Sabot slug. The hunter fired from a distance of 2 yards. The área was very dense brush, low visibility. The male boar had a weight around 230 pounds.

Two weeks ago a friend was able to see a dream becoming real.He hunted a wild boar with a cal .50 blackpowder express rifle, made in the 80's here (Basque Country )
He used 90grains of blackpowder and 300 grains Hornady sabot .
The bullet get total penetration through the neck at 25 yards when the boar was running.
