From today's (18 Sep 25) DoD contract announcements:

"O.F. Mossberg & Sons Inc., North Haven, Connecticut, was awarded an $18,577,500 modification (P00001) to contract W15QKN-25-D-0016 for the procurement of Mossberg M590 17-Inch 12GA BLK shotguns. The modification brings the total cumulative face value of the contract to $19,056,687. Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of May 28, 2030. Army Contracting Command, Newark, New Jersey, is the contracting activity."

Didn't realize that the Army was still buying 590's. The 17-inch barrel must be a military special.

The original 17 inch barrel length requirement was actually driven by the rack limitations on Navy submarines. Assuming the shotguns were used for guard duty when the subs were at dock.

However, the "rumor" as to why this bigger contracts called for 17 inch barrels was in part to help preclude thefts and allow for easier tracking of stolen weapons. Not sure if this is true but makes sense. Apparently the one inch difference is the only change form the 18 inch law enforcement models.

The other story is these are being procured as anti-drone weapons to be used with the 3 inch two ounce tungsten rounds.

Maybe one of our current military members can provide additional info.
