Picked up my new 940TR yesterday.
First thing I did when I got home was to test mag tube capacity checking for spring binding, 7 fit no problem.
Then I did a good cleaning & lubing, it's involved but not difficult.
Was hoping to use the factory polymer barrel clamp (despite the reported ptoblems) w/a Magpul cantilever rail for my WML but the M-Lok bolts on the rail started digging into the barrel finsih so that was a no-go.
So, instead used an HBI aluminum barrel clamp w/QD cups & picatinny rail which I like *much* better despite weighing 3oz more: HBI 940 Barrel Clamps
I have a Streamlight TLR RM2 currently mounted, I'm still experimenting w/the best location for the remote switch. We'll see if recoil kills the batteries over time.
Tested for mag tube spring binding again and, sure enough, I had to adjust the tightness of the barrel clamp bolts to eliminate the binding. While today's testing went well, I've got a Wolff EP spring en route 'just in case' as I've read the unusually long factory spring may be the primary cause of the binding.
One major reason I went w/the TR instead of the standard model was the installed QD sockets. Strangely enough, the front sockets worked great, but the rear sockets didn't want to lock in the new Magpul QDM sling swivels (but locked in some older QDM sling swivels I had, only type I currently own).
Another reason I went with the TR instead of the standard model w/the Holosun 407k (6moa dot) is I wanted to install the Holosun 507k (circle, dot or circle + dot). Installation of the 507k was fast/easy. I've never used an RDS on a shotgun before and originally hadn't intended to use one on the 940TR but I decided to go for it, figuring I could sell the 507k if I decided I didn't like it. Bottom line: I like it! I definitely like the circle-dot reticle and may switch to just the circle after more testing. I like the 507k's reticle options, battery life, brightness memory & shake-awake features, for me all it would take is an auto-brightness control feature to be perfect for my needs (yes, they make one w/auto-brightness control but it's too large for the OR cut on the 940TR's receiver). The 507k is at a very good height, neither too high or too low, the reticle comes fast & naturally into my FOV.
Hit the range this morning with a friend to try it out, loaded it up w/7.5 game loads to see if it would function with them right out of the box and it did. Function was 100% all morning (appx 60rds fired) except for a single failure to extract w/my fav Fiocchi 9-pellt #1 buck, apparently the extractor didn't engage the rim of the shell. The 940TR handles well and recoil was very mild, but didn't seem that much different from a pump w/a good recoil pad, imho).
Also tried high-brass slugs and S&B 12-pellet 00 (the S&B load is incredibly dirty, I'm amazed at the amount of crud it generates), and this is when the 940TR's gas system & excellent recoil pad really started to shine.
Recoil was much less than a pump w/the same loads and not punishing at all. I think I could shoot heavy loads through the 940TR all day w/o difficulty.
Oh, it's pretty easy to ghost-load the 940TR, functions just fine.
Complaints: Spring binding is by far the biggest and most serious. I'm running the factory spring for now since it seems to be working correctly, but I'll keep an eye on it and switch to the Wolff spring if I have future problems.
Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I cannot unload the mag tube by the recommended procedure despite multiple tries. No big deal, I can just work the action to empty the mag tube.
It would be nice if the 940TR came w/the choke tube options on the standard Pro Tactical instead of the Cylinder Bore, but if it was a deal-breaker for me I would have opted for the standard Pro Tactical (ymmv).
I'm glad I had sling swivels that would lock into the rear QD sockets, but my new ones should have locked in regardless.
The fore end feels good in the hand but is lacking decent flat spots for attaching a remote switch.
I'm hoping to do pattern testing with a couple of loads tomorrow morning.
ETA: FDE/Coyote/Browns are not my fav firearm colors but this 'Patriot Brown' is really growing on me, depending upon the light it almost looks OD.
