Mossy 835 Ulti-Mag 12 gauge slug barrel with adjustable rear sight

I’m taking my 835 along Saturday to accompany my 10mm pistol for the MN deer opener if a longer shot is required. My question is, our indoor range is only 25 yards, and am uncertain how to adjust the rear sight if say a deer is say, 75 yards out. My other option is to bring the Winchester SXP with smooth bore with fiber sights and an 18” barrel. I do have both sabot slugs for the Mossy, and rifled slugs for the SXP, it’s just a matter of which to bring. Ultimately my hope is to take a deer with the P220 Elite 10, but must be an ethical shot either way, plus having a slug gun with would be beneficial…Thoughts?

While I haven't shot a rifled slug barrel in years I do remember the old rule of thumb we use to use. But true accuracy of this somewhat depends on the slug weight, the velocity and barrel length.

That aside here's the old rule I remember. If you sight in at 50 yards and shoot a target at 100 yards the drop is around 1.7 inches and if your target is at 150 yards the slug will drop an additional 4-5 inches below the 100 yard impact point.

Maybe some others with recent experience will chime in but I seriously doubt you will have any trouble with your 25 yard sight in gun and shooting targets at 75 or even a 100 yards.

Regards

Thanks Ernst, the barrel is a 24”, and have the option of two types of sabots on hand, both being 385gr I believe.
Winchester Partition Gold High Velocity 12 Gauge 2-3/4in Sabot Slug - 1,750 fps

Remington's Premier AccuTip 12 Gauge 2-3/4in Sabot Slug 1,850 fps

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Ken, I just looked at the specifications on the Winchester shell and you're still getting 1436 fps at 100 yards. Not sure about the test barrel length but that has little impact.

I'd say you probably have no need to worry.

Specifications

  • Caliber: 12 Gauge
  • Shell: 2-3/4"
  • Style: Sabot Slug
  • Weight: 385 Grains
  • Velocity: 1725 fps
  • Velocity at 100 Yards: 1436 fps
  • Drop at 50 Yards: +1.0"
  • Drop at 100 Yards: +/-0.0"

Below is the barrel I would use

Mossberg 92802 Slug Shotgun Barrel 12 Gauge 24" 3.5" Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Steel Blued. This Mossberg 24" Slug barrel features adjustable rifle sights, fully-rifled bore, and blued finish. It is compatible with Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag.
Thanks

Ken

Thank you Ernst, love your quote by the way…minus the whisky, part. I quit a year ago and only by the grace of God I haven’t looked back

25-75 yard zero should still hit with no change in your sights.

You would likely still be within 3 inches even at 100 yards.

Thanks, because I don’t have a ton of fancy sabots, any thoughts on the direction to turn the Williams rear sight screw on the Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag ported slugster barrel for changing the elevation (the direction), as well as what direction to turn the windage screw? I’m sure I could figure it out if I had a bunch of slugs, but only have a total of 15
Thank for everyone’s help
Ken

Great, Thanks John, now I just have to figure out how to adjust (the correct direction) on my new slug barrel without burning up all my sabots

Thanks, I searched for some time before I asked the question, but couldn’t find what I was looking for
