New Mossberg 990 Aftershock

Nice little shoty. Not sure if the squeeze is worth the juice on this one. If I already had a shoty pump and they wanted to trade I’m not sure I would. The pump is hard to keep on target. The semi would be more difficult.

I might be interested if someone can make an adapter that will allow me to use my minishells. Otherwise, I'll stick with my Shockwave.

Mark, I wonder if the mini shells would be powerful enough to cycle the action? This seems to be a modified 940 action.

I've been running a Shockwave since they came out in 2017 and don't see any advantages to the Aftershock.

That said, I do like the minor grip changes to the birdshead grip but wish they had put the OD ports on each side vice the single one on the bottom rear.

Everyone is highlighting how fast you can empty the 990's mag tube! Not sure that's a big advantage other than on the range!

Regards

Ernst,

I'm not sure about the power of the minishells. But my homebrew shells are simply birdshot with shortened hulls, shortened wad, and a lighter load of #4 Buck. Unless the lighter load reduces the power, they should work.

And I also like the new birdshead grip. But I don't like the price.

Mark, you may be right about hand loads? But Mossberg isn't going to offer anything unless all the commercial loads cycle right. And I have my doubts at this point about mini's.

I'm trying to find some technical info on the the new offering but no luck so far. Can't even find an owners manual online so I'm wondering if these have even shipped yet?

I'm guessing this is a modified 940 mechanism. But suspect we will need to ask Mossberg for details.

If anyone see one in the stores let us know. I've seen some offerings online but not sure they have stock ready to ship?

Regarding the new birdshead - I wish they would have put QD ports on each side near where the grip fastens to the receiver vice on the rear bottom. Many of us are currently running 550 cord loops on our Shockwaves with single point slings. Dual QD's would add to being ambi.

That would be great. I'd like an aftermarket company to develop something like this. I'm using a swivel, but a QD port would be better.

I did an internet search last night and saw several price offerings on line averaging $999 plus or minus a $100 dollars. But the majority indicated this was either pre-order or simply said it was out of stock.

So I think we can conclude at this point the 990 has not shipped. I also check the Mossberg site today for a copy of the owners manual and none is listed.

At this point, whithout any technical information, I'm not sure we can determine much about the actual function of the 990.

Stay tuned.

Regards

If this thing takes off I’m sure a company like defender tactical will develop some bits and pieces to add value and functionality.

I’m interested in the gas operating system. There is no room for the typical 930/940 bolt return spring that is in the stock. What are they using in the front end to bring the bolt home?

If it’s revolutionary then maybe the 990 is the go forward strategy.

I found this picture online which is supposedly the new 990 action. However, there was no details included and still no owners manual posted on line.

I suspect this is an old picture of the prototype that was tested on back given the barrel coupler isn't the same as recently released pictures.

Amazing that you make an announcment about 10 days ago but no real info and I haven't seen any indication that the product has shipped.

I've got one w/ the CT laser inbound to me here in GA from "Tombstone Tactical" in AZ. We've got a CWO3 in VA who's had two now for about a week and he confirms a totally different gas system than the 940/930 (just like " Jmm14534 " mentioned above) and that the action is in the forearm and receiver similar to how the Remington TAC-13 is with it's "V3" gas system. I'm being told it does not have the same "heavy" recoil impulse as a 590 Shockwave but certainly more than a 940 Pro. It'll cycle both high and low brass shells, but no mini's/shorty's due to carrier design and not enough oomph from the 1 3/4" shells to cycle the action. Once I get hands on mine, I'll be dropping more info on it stock, as I'll soon be SBS'ing it with the $200 stamp. Since there's nothing behind the grip itself, it'll take regular 500/590 stock & hardware. More to follow...

If possible when you get your's, could you post a copy parts schematic and / or other relative data on the 990.

This is definitely a different gas system than the 940 and likely simlar to the picture I posted above which I think was from the prototype.

I've been trying daily to get more data but nothing so far even from Mossberg.

Following my initial inquiry I received the attached description. Again this evening I've requested a copy of the owners manual from Mossberg and got an automatic reply saying they would attempt to reply within 72 hours. I'm still trying guys. If this doesn't work maybe someone will be kind enough to post a copy when they recieve their new 990.

Can't imagine why the owners manual would not be posted on line so potential buyers could read the details. Especially important for a completely different firearm model!

With the 14.75" barrel versions, isn't that considered a short barrel -- necessitating a $200 permission slip from the federales? [after a several month wait]

I just received a reply from Mossberg to my request for a copy of the owners manual and posting it for your info.

Thank you for your email. We do not have a copy of the 990 owners guide available as a digital copy and we do not have access to the current owners manual. They are too new and have not been provided yet. The manuals would be in the box with a new firearm. We are hoping to have marketing add this to the website soon.
We apologize for any inconvenience
Have a great day

Sincerely,

The National Firearms Act (NFA) regulates certain types of firearms, including short-barreled shotguns (SBS). An SBS is generally defined as a shotgun with a barrel length of less than 18 inches or an overall length of less than 26 inches. Because the Shockwave’s barrel is 14 inches but its overall length exceeds 26 inches due to its specially designed “birdshead grip,” it avoids classification as an SBS. Generally, the Mossberg Shockwave is legal at the federal level because it is classified as a “firearm” and not a “shotgun” or “short-barreled shotgun” (SBS) under the National Firearms Act (NFA). This is primarily due to the overall length being greater than 26 inches and the absence of a stock designed to be shouldered.

As with the Shockwave this designation would also apply to the Aftershock and I assume similar language, which was included with the Shockwave, will be included in the 990's owners manual. This same designation was applied to the Remington like models.
