New Mossberg 990 Aftershock

After reading the manual it appears the photo I posted earlier, which I thought was the prototype, appears to be the actual production gas system.

Hopefully when someone acquires one they can post some detailed pictures. The manual doesn't actually describe complete disassembly of the gas system spring and forearm.

The other interesting upgrade is a "cocking indicator" located on the forward trigger guard. While I guess this is nice I'm not sure about it's utility. As I read the manual it does not indicate if if the chamber contains a shell or not. So what's the real purpose? Another lawyer add?

What does eveyone think?

Innovative, but before I even think about one, I'll wait for a reputable review or two from one of the online pundits. Even then, it would be a single purpose gun for me: self defense at home or in the car. I do like the idea of a semi auto shorty. The ability to get off multiple shots is attractive.

Having been a Shockwave owner since they first came out I'm not convinced regarding the complexity of the 990 gas system nor the price.

You can get a pump Shockwave for about half the street price of the Aftershock. Same length and round capacity.

And while the speed of semiauto multi shots "may" be a little faster than a person who really knows how to operate a pump Shockwave to me the real issue is accuracy of rounds on target and effective management of stored rounds on board. One thing I really like about the new 990 is how they have opened up and removed the sharp edges on the loading port to facilitate blind thumb in loading. This modification has been one many of the old Shockwave owners did themselves and we've suggested this change to Mossberg for some time. Certainly facilitates combat reloading on the move.

I'm with you Kevin and waiting to hear some owner reviews vice the paid internet guntooubers.

Regards

After looking at the parts lists and illustrations in the owners manual it appears the gas system is very similar to a Turkish design. I know Mossberg has business partnerships in Turkey so might make sense to incorporate one of their designs.

Maybe someone else has better info?

When someone posts good pictures of the gas system we can better compare it with the Turkish ones.

Regards

I had hoped by now someone had bought one and would post some detailed pictures of the gas system??????

Maybe the price tag is scaring people away. Standard plain Jane Shockwave is going for under $400.

Anyone buying?

I'm trying to justify it. The more I learn the more attractive it gets....except the $$$$. Lower recoil [any semi-auto in truth]; short length. It would be the ideal road-trip gun. I've got one of those Grey Man Tactical Molle panels that straps to the back of the car seat with mounts for a fire extinguisher, med stuff...and a gun just like this. :) But there are no road trips in the foreseeable future, so...........

Kevin, I totally agree with you on the utility and having had a Shockwave for years now I can attest to it's use for both HD/CQB and as a truck gun. In some trucks it fits perfectly between the drivers seat and the center console thus immediately available for use. If I didn't already have a Shockwave I'd likely buy an Aftershock. I've seen several positive reviews on the internet "gun" sites but no individual owner reviews or comments yet. I suspect the price will come down some once all the dealers have inventory on hand. Seems like Mossberg may have jumped the gun on info release vice having the inventory in dealers hands the same day as the announcement. This version has been rumored and apparently prototyped for a couple of years.

I also wonder if Mossberg will incorporate some of the Aftershock features into the Shockwave line. Several of us have been encourging the opening up of the loading port for years and have done our own modifications to our Shockwaves. I also like the new birdhead design with a quick connect sling port. The other modification we've advocated is the reversing of the foreend strap to put the screws on the outside of the strap vice the inside. Something you can simply do yourself to keep the screw heads and the sharp strap ends from cutting your hands. Some of us have also shortened the strap to better fit our hands but left it long enough to accomodate the wearing of gloves in cold weather.

However, I still don't understand the price differential between the basic Shockwave at around $400 and the basic Aftershock at a little under $900.

It will also be interesting to see if the pending legislation on the Hearing Protection Act and the Short Act passes and is signed by Trump. If the Short Act is passed it "may" really shake up the short barreled weapon market. Certainly looks promising on the HPA, which passed the House, but not sure the about the Short. Need to contact your Congressional folks.

Regards

Finally picked up a new Mossberg 990 Aftershock semi-auto 12ga "other" firearm, that was also submitted via e-form to be SBS'd. Prior to the stock install, I'll be comparing it to some of the other boomsticks in the collection for a first-hand feel of how it runs with all 12ga varieties...

More details to follow as I unpack from the MTT op we recently returned from. I'll have more time for extra pics and range report...

Pics of the new 990 aftershock with my 940 Pro Tactical...
Notice the "cocked trigger" indicator from the 940 is carried over on the 990. As these are both semi-auto's, this is actually a good thing (not sure if the 930 had this...)

Notice that the bolt release on the 990 is now "reinforced" on the 990 with an exterior frame. Since I have large hands, I've already swapped out the OEM "large" charging handle" for an even "larger" enhanced charging handle for the 940 Pro from GG&G...

The plan is to order another Mesa Tactical 940 Pro side saddle to install on the 990 Aftershock since their trigger pins are in the same locations...
20250525_001628.jpg
As you can see, the 990 Aftershock does not have the factory optic cut out in the receiver like the 940 Pro but I'm sure that may happen with the potential 2.0 model...
20250525_001620.jpg20250525_001442.jpg
The forearms/fore ends are the same except the 990 has the same handstrap of the 590 Shockwave screwed into it...
20250525_001408.jpg
Same magazine tube follower between the 990 and the 940 Pro but the shell lifter on the 990 now has been milled out in the center...

I haven't performed a complete tear-down yet, but the 940 Pro and 990 Aftershock have two different gas systems. As I did the SBS e-form submission, I had to refer to my 590's for stock lengths due to this difference for stock option for the 990. I'm going to use a Flash-5 from TactaLoad like I did for one of my 590 Shockwave SBS's once the Form 1 returns approved. Anyways, the 990 has all of it's gas system in the receiver (like Remington's TAC-13) so the new "bird's head grip" installs the same as the 590 Shockwave. The 940 uses the stock in it's gas system's operation...20250525_001358.jpg
Like I said earlier, I've already swapped out charging handles and the new/larger GG&G handle fits & functions perfectly with the new Crimson Trace side saddle laser housing... 20250525_001127.jpg20250525_001145.jpg20250525_000819.jpg20250525_001034.jpg
The new barrel clamp for the 990 is made of polymer like the OEM clamp for the 940 Pro, but it at least is a bit more "beefier". Not sure how it will hold up to heat with an attached accessory on it's 3 M-Lok slots...20250525_003057.jpg20250525_003108.jpg
Extra pics of the new 990 Aftershock with a couple of 590's (regular and SBS)...

I've got mini-shell adapters installed in these Shockwaves (one is a 590S that was "upgraded" with a Defender Tactical Universal Minishell Adapter for ALL shell sizes, and the other is using an OP-SOL adapter), but the 990 Aftershock is a complete "No-Go" for mini shells due to the carrier design. Too bad... 20250525_002826.jpg20250525_002831.jpg20250525_002716.jpg20250525_002848.jpg
Update... As I'm known to add on creature comfort items, I was curious if the enhanced ambi-safety setup from NDZ would work properly on the 990 Aftershock WITH the new Crimson Trace side saddle laser. The new OEM safety is nice and is like the new OEM safety on the 940 Pro, but I need something a bit more substantial for my "Flintstone" thumb(s)...20250525_204720.jpg
There is just enough clearance for the new safety to move smoothly by the Crimson Trace laser. Nice...

Airborne, thanks for the great pictures. Those are really helpful to see some of the new features.

If at some point, if you remove the forend could you take some pictures of the gas system. Some of us are trying to see if it's an adapted Turkish design. Certainly looks that way from the parts list.

Look forward to hearing how it shoots.

Regards

Air-B, Thank You for the most excellent review and comparo of the 990 and 940 Pro. That "style" is probably going to be the "regular" style now...

Very basic gas system with not a lot of user "adjustments" to tune. I can tell the 990 will not be as smooth as the V3 system in the TAC-13, but it will still kick less than a pumped 590 Shockwave. Simple bolt and trigger assembly (no over-travel screw, even though owner's manual says so)...1000008515.jpg1000008516.jpg1000008517.jpg1000008518.jpg1000008519.jpg1000008520.jpg1000008521.jpg1000008522.jpg1000008523.jpg
