New Mossberg 990 Aftershock

Airborne, just a first look but the gas system design has some similarities to the Turkish design which I know Mossberg has access to given some of their models are made there.

Couple of questions:

Is the trigger housing polymer (plastic)? I know Mossberg favors that material and despite some critics I've never seen one fail.

Appears to have a single extractor? Again this is simular to the Turkish design.

Nice that they chromed plated the magazine tube which sure helps with cleaning.

Be curious as to how you like the action release? Hard to tell how much is exposed.

Thanks for the great pictures. Sure helps answer some questions regarding the gas system. Nice loking firearm!

Regards

The gas system looks to be the exact same as the Turkish system, so there's that. I've only seen their design online and not firsthand, but they look like a match all things considered.

The trigger housing is polymer and is similar to the 940 Pro Tac's trigger assembly.

There is only one (1) extractor on the 990, but I wish there was a pair. Nothing wrong with a single extractor, but two (2) of them is more reliable (especially on a semi-auto).

The action release is OK and similar to the 940 Pro but it is nothing like the Benelli or Beretta bolt releases in terms of a "solid feel". The added exterior frame around it is mainly for appearances.

SBS Form 1 got kicked back because we put "990 Aftershock" in box 4d. instead of "990"... (eyeroll) Sending it back up corrected, and more to follow...

Airborne, thanks for confirming my observations.

I think the gas system will preform very well with most standard loads. Might have some issues with light loads but likely will work with them after break in.

To me the biggest disappointment is the single extractor design.

Thanks again for all the pictures. I don't think anyone else on the internet has posted detailed pictures.

Have you decided on a stock yet?

Regards

I'll go with the "Flash-5" from TactaLoad, as I'm running one of those with GREAT success on a 590S SBS. It'll hold 5 extra shells and it's weight/bulk will easily help balance the 990 plus soak up what little recoil impulse will be left behind.

Changing out the front red fiber optic with an orange "Big Dot" (w/ tritium) from XS Sights.

Also adding a polymer +6 "SureShell" side mount from Mesa Tactical to see how it fits & functions.

Finally, I've already added the "Tactical Safety Selector" from NDZ and the "Enhanced Charging Handle" from GG&G.

I'll see how the stock mag tube spring is holding up after the first 250-300 shells we put through it this weekend (hopefully), as I've got extra pairs of Wolff Springs (6-Shell mag tube) on standby. We plan on using everything available: high and low brass; 2 3/4" and 3"; bird/buck/slug.

Airborne, was wondering about your thoughts on front sight.

What did you not like about the new front fiber optic sight?

I thought it was potentially a good upgrade for the Shockwave/Aftershock platforms. And was even thinking about upgrading my shockwave front bead to fiber.

Did you find issues with it or was it simply personal preference for the Big Dot?

Regards

To answer your question, it's simply a personal preference and no issues with the fiber optics on the 990. 99% of my shotguns with an actual "stock" run XS Big Dot sights up front, whereas all of my "other firearms" with a bird's-head grip run either a Jumbo Bead or High Ball front bead (brass for both). I'm rather "rough" with my shotguns and fiber optic sights don't last as long as I'd like. Nothing wrong at all with them, but I'm "lazy" on replacing them. In fact, the only shotgun in my collection that still has it's original fiber optic sights (front & rear) is my Fabarm STF-12 ( https://fabarmpro.com/ )

The STF-12 is certainly expensive for a 12ga pump gun, but it is IMO by far the finest tactical pump shotgun available off the shelf (... if you can find one in-stock, that is). It is more than stout enough for me to keep the fiber optics on it without having to worry about them, plus they lower co-witness with an HS503.

Updated pics of 990 coming after work today/tonight...

The 990 is definitely "softer" shooting 12ga platform than the 590S, as either an "other" firearm or as a stock equipped SBS. I'll post a decent range report on the 990 with both the (improved) bird's head grip and with the stock this weekend once I get work reports out of the way. Hope to do more shooting than the 20 shells I was lucky to send downrange during lunch. In the meantime, more pics from this morning...

Little by little, the price is creeping down. Still too rich for me, though.

I've still yet to post my after action/range report on the 990 SBS vs 590 SBS, so I apologize. I'll thrash myself accordingly and get to it this coming week.

Incidentally, I haven’t seen any 990's on any LGS shelves in my frequent stops in GA, SC, and NC. Most people are saying the prices are a bit much for an "other firearm" at the moment...

If the wife and I were going to hit to road and do some traveling (which is not going to happen now) I would likely sell a couple of guns and get a 990. If we were going to Portland or Seattle, I'd get one for each of us. :) Along with ballistic glass and armor door inserts for the trusty Subaru.

Thanks for linking that article - the 990 is really a true innovation for Mossberg. Is a Form 1 required only if you plan on putting a stock on one? I still get befuddled with the barrel length issue.

My only real complaint, which applies to most Mossberg offerings, is the lack of a threaded barrel so you could change out the chokes depending on the shotshells and game/target you are after.

Several of us have voiced this complaint to Mossberg on several occasions without any luck.

There are aftermarket threaded barrels for Mossberg 500s and Maverick 88s but none for 590 versions.

Maybe drop a PM to John A.? I think he had a tap to thread cylinder bore barrels. Maybe he's looking for a side job. I miss some of the oldtimers... :(

I typically converse with John every few days. He's doing well.

I have threaded 500 barrels and several chokes but haven't done any 590 barrels.

As I told Mossberg I'd like to see a threaded Shockwave barrel. I was hoping the Aftershock was going to have a threaded barrel but no such luck.
