ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — As missed warning signs pile up in investigations of mass killings, New York state is rolling out a novel strategy to screen applicants for gun permits. People seeking to carry concealed handguns will be required to hand over lists of their social media accounts for a review of their “character and conduct.”

It’s an approach applauded by many Democrats and national gun control advocacy groups, but some experts have raised questions about how the law will be enforced and address free speech concerns.

Some of the local officials who will be tasked with reviewing the social media content also are asking whether they’ll have the resources and, in some cases, whether the law is even constitutional.

Sheriffs haven’t received additional money or staffing to handle a new application process, said Peter Kehoe, the executive director of the New York Sheriffs’ Association. The law, he asserted, infringes on Second Amendment rights, and while applicants must list their social media accounts, he doesn’t think local officials will necessarily look at them.

“I don’t think we would do that,” Kehoe said. “I think it would be a constitutional invasion of privacy.”

The new requirement, which takes effect in September, was included in a law passed last week that sought to preserve some limits on firearms after the Supreme Court ruled that most people have a right to carry a handgun for personal protection. It was signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, who noted shooters sometimes telegraph their intent to hurt others.

The law also will require applicants to undergo hours of safety training, prove they’re proficient at shooting, provide four character references and sit for in-person interviews.

Let’s just make it so difficult to carry a gun legally, that by the time someone feels threatened enough to want a gun, almost everyone just decides to carry illegally.

People who don’t feel threatened or don’t feel the need for a gun have plenty of time to go through those bureaucratic processes.

People who do feel threatened will not bother. They will buy a gun off the street, they will pay black market prices, but they won’t have to go through all the paperwork or wait for the bureaucracy, just to defend their lives.

And of course people who know that they have a clouded history of online conduct will also know how to disguise this fact. Thanks to social media, everyone online will know.

China is doing very similar with a score card.

Score too low, can't even get a train ticket.

Unfortunately I live in the socialist state. I would expect these new laws will eventually be struck down. And the key factor that all the demonrats forget is criminals are criminals because they don’t pay attention to any law.

Its the game politicians that want to take away our rights play.

Step 1 Pass law that violates people rights.
Step 2 Fight for the law in court
Step 3 Rescind the law when the court finds it unconstitutional.
Step 4 Draft new law that is effectively the same as the old law but skirts the ruling of the previous courts decision.
Step 5 Go To Step 1

Fortunately I am still inl a 'Shall Issue' state. As long as you do not have certain criminal charges in your past or have been deem to have a disqualifying mental illness the State Shall issue you a Concealed license of purchase permit..

I would prefer to just do away with all of it but it is what it is.

I also know that it can all change with a single legislative decision which takes time and money to fight.

I accept that the door of freedom swings both ways. You cannot be free to make decisions without accepting that people will make bad decisions. We should deal with those people individually, not by punishing the 99.9% who made the right decision.

As an educator, I do not have a problem with a limited amount of training/evaluation to prove proficiency in a skill. Such as with driving a vehicle or drawing blood. Or such as buying or carrying a firearm. ;)

Here in FL, although the push is on for constitutional carry, if you have a CWP you can eliminate any waiting period to pick up a gun. In other words, you can buy and walk out the door with it. I'm curious how they will deal with that beneficial part of the permit. I wonder if there will be any kind of enhanced background check down the road? We already have red flag "laws" in place since the knee-jerk gubna **** Scott signed the bill soon after the MSD shooting...
