Sticky rear of action (slide fully to rear) - Mav88

Bobster, I'm hanging in there and blessed with reasonably good health. My only real problem is significant hearing loss due to decades of gunfire and military operations.

I guess we're hijacking this thread but doubt Cadd will kick us oldtimers out!

And Mr. Ricky Bobby, at 39 years young, will likely laugh with us old guys. Some day he will catch up with us!

My goal for 2026 is to shoot a minimum of 1000 rounds per month including pistol, rifle and shotgun.

I still shoot my Shockwave from eye level and shoot all types of shells including Brenneke Black Magic magnums. They do kick a little!

Regards

You guys make me feel young. I just turned 78 this past October, lol. In 2026 I want to do more. Our move consumed so much of 2025. I did do a little motorcycling, not enough, a little flying, again not enough, and a little shooting. Hopefully this year, with more time and better luck all of those will improve.

I'm 75 last November and my one and only 2026 resolution is to crawl out from underneath the rock and get to the shotgun-only outdoor range that is just 8 miles west. Powder Creek, here I come. :)

Just got notification the 7.75" action tube back in stock at Midway so I ordered one - will update when it arrives, got free shipping with 12ga some snap caps which I could use (only have 4) when testing mag capacity an function on my other shotguns-

Hopefully this solves it and its as butter smooth releasing as my other 2!

Since everyone loves updates -

Swap of new action tube did not solve, maybe a minimal improvement? I'll keep messing around till I figure it out - the good news is I have a spare 7 3/4 action tube now (and an elevator as well which I purchased some years back -

Since I swapped my other tube and wood forend from my 500, and it was fixed, I'm thinking to try to take the wood forend off and see if that does anything, maybe some small sanding is needed inside the forend to keep the bars 'moving' (maybe the retrograde wood forend fits too tightly) - but since an action tube swap fixed it, I'm fairly certain its something on the tube, forend, or maybe loosen the nut a smidge, I really didn't tighten it too much

I do like problem solving, the Maverick is fully functional but just want it to be right

I'm a fan of "easing" a gun in--NOT "breaking" it in. ;) This involves taking it down and cleaning up any rough or overly sharp edges of stampings and castings. Of course I don't smooth parts that are designed to be sharp like sears and extractors.

No difference (bare tube) - but, I did find a burr on the action tube notch (left side) So I filed it off and fine sandpaper to smooth it out - definitely an improvement than this morning with the 'new' action tube out of the box!

I think I'll probably quit there and maybe do some dremel polishing of that area as well - I put in enough time and its about 50% looser now than it was at the rear and only getting hung up maybe 10% of the time that it was, this morning I could basically make it get stuck at the rear 90% of the time -

I've taken and reassembled this one about 20 times already so its had a good once over, I'll let it break in the rest with shooting, I guess some of them are 'butter smooth' out of the box, and some are not, which is ok- I even took the ejector and screw out and made sure no burrs on that as well)

I think we should be good to go - so keep an eye out for burrs people, even on brand new parts!

Sounds like you are making progress.

I'd do one more thing - take a good look at the finish on the arms. I've run into inconsistent finishes in the past and had to use scotch brite to smooth out the finish.

In one case I took the finish off down to the bare metal and then gave it a coating of wax to smooth it out.

Hope all our comments and ideas heldped.

Regards

They sure did Ernst thank you to all!

Finish looks pretty good on the arms (they always show some wear on the bluing after being actuated a few dozen times) I don't see anything inconsistent but I may buff a bit lightly with some 0000, and polish them up - I should have taken pics, that was definitely a nasty burr on the one action arm -

There was also a rough edge on the ejector as well which I lightly filed to be smooth as well - Overall I'd say its about 75% better than the brand new arm out of the box, and about 50% better than the arm that I swapped out - one day when I'm tinkering more and have some extra time I'll polish up some areas more with a stone but pretty happy with it as is now (The Maverick is not a primary self defense shotgun for me) -

Since winter down here in NC doesn't seem to want to quit yet, a good weekend project will be to strip the stock and forend with some Citri-strip or similar, and restain and seal the wood to show the grain - yes, the Retrograde furniture having the classic look is nice, but the almost 'paint like' finish on it is super slick, and doesn't seem as durable
