Where do I put a red dot reflex sight on a 930 JM Pro?

Sierra

Copper BB
I have a 930 JM Pro. I want to mount a red dot reflex sight * on it. The mounting rail allows the sight to be mounted several places along the receiver.

Is it better to mount it closer to the eye or further away?

* Vortex Venom red dot

Thank you.

Most of what I’ve seen, they’re mounted near the rear, a couple nearer the front.

@John A. i know you aren’t the only one here using optics on a shotgun but you’ve recently added some yes? Any insight?

I just noticed the Jerry Miculek has his moutned to the barrel in a similar place as a lever guns rear sight.

Mount it wherever you can pick up on it the fastest and is most comfortable for you.

Just my opinion, if you mount it very rearward, it obstructs a lot of your sight picture.

If you mount it way in front of your eye, it makes it harder to pick up/find the red dot.

The Vortex Venom is very streamlined, so you won't have the feeling of obscuring much of your surroundings like you might with a tube dot. Mounting it on a rail places it high enough that you may run out of rise adjustment in your stock getting it comfortable. The further forward, the lesser the issue. Many that you see running further back are using the Monte-Carlo style stock from the Slugster version of the 930 to get their cheek weld up high enough.

An alternative is to get the optic down lower on the gun by getting it off the rail. The popular Burris Speed Bead is not an option for the Mossbergs as the tang safety makes it a non starter. We do have a mount for the Burris Fast Fire and Vortex Venom that mounts directly to the front or rear set of threaded receiver holes.

With this method, the optic sits lower than the rail and standard mount combination.

The other option is a vent rib mount, but as already stated, it can be tougher to pick up the dot with it that far forward.

@OR3GUN what are your thoughts on a Bushnell TRS 25 on a shotgun? Do you have a similar low mount for something like that or would it require a rail from EGW or something?

You will need a standard rail for the Bushnell TRS. As a tube sight you will have to decide how much peripheral you are willing to give up. They are popular for some on a rifle as a side dot in Open division, but the reflex sights like the Vortex Venom are quicker for most on a shotgun.

How do you feel about a Leupold Delta Point pro for my 930 JM pro? What would be a suitable mount for it?

The Leupold Delta Point Pro is a nice sight! We don't have a Sight Saddle mount for it, but we did introduce one for the Trijicon RMR/SRO and compatible Holosun optics.

The Trijicon SRO one of the nicest sight options we've had our hands on lately. It is similar in price to the Delta Point Pro. We just don't see enough of the Leupold in use on anything to justify creating a version for that platform yet.

Old thread, but I like the dot positioned about at the front of the chamber. I hate bulk, so I went with a pistol flip-up optic on a Pic rail (with a groove deep enough to co-witness the front H3 bead). Slips in a scabbard, comes out without snagging, and I'm happy so far.
