Anyone seen a working lawmaker you can drop a firearm into?

Naive question - Are movie prop guns always so expensive? Is that due to their 'custom' relationship to the movie?
I'm thinking for a few dollars more I could buy a Beretta and with a few custom grips I've got a real Resident Evil handgun.
