Greetings from Central Virginia. I bought my first Mossberg shotgun back in 1987 when I was still a young Specialist Fourth Class (Spec 4) in the US Army. I bought a Mossberg 500 Conversion shotgun that came with an 18.5-inch and a 20+ inch barrel. I still own that shotty.

I am currently considering buying a Mossberg 930 SPX after looking one over at the Gun Shop I sometimes work at. I like what I have read and would love to get some feedback from current owners.

Specifically, how does this gun handle birdshot (#7.5 & #8 for Trap and Skeet shooting) and how does it handle "Low Recoil" Tactical Buckshot (8 nd 9-pellet)?

Thanks in advanced.

Welcome from StL MO!

I have the 24" version of the 930 (much different from the SPX) I added a mag tube for 7+1 and am currently running Williams fiber optic sights. I recently shot a USPSA shotgun match (mostly steel + 8 launched clays). 7 1/2 was the cutoff. I ran full choke and good knockdown on the steel and still spread enough to hit 7 of 8 clays. The 5 stations took over 100 rounds of 7 1/2 and the gun ran like a champ. The Williams are pretty open for a good field of vision. I have to wonder what the SPX sights would be like in trap or skeet and if the 20" barrel would be too 'quick' or twichy?!

I've shot a lot of buck but do not buy the Low recoil - anything 2 3/4 still seems to get me good follow up shots. 3" - not so much. I'm in pretty good shape and have the build of a stump so that probably helps as well.

I think the whole 930 line rocks (and I'm not alone in that) - gotta find what works for you.

Howdy CarlosDJackal and welcome to the club.

Welcome aboard and thank you for your service Sir!

Take some time to read through our 930 section. The 930 SPX can be a great shotgun but it's not without its share of issues, most of them having to do with sloppy manufacturing and poor QC from the factory. There are however, plenty of 930 SPX owners here who've had no issues. We've got a great group of folks here on Mossberg Owners and the atmosphere is very laid back. The only thing we like better than discussing each other's guns is lookin at 'em, so be sure to post pics of your 500 and any other firearms you own in the various sub-forums. You'll find that we're into a lot more than just Mossberg around here. Let us know if you have any questions.

Enjoy the site!

Welcome from MI and thank you for your service.

My 930 handles light loads pretty good. The short barrel and elevated sight on the SPX would make it a bit harder to use for clays, i prefer a bead sight and a longer barrel for that sort of thing.

Are you planning on swapping barrels for this or keeping it in the SPX configuration?

Thanks, all.

If I get a 930 SPX I'd keep it in the SPX configuration to shoot Clays. I like making the Fudds shake their heads in disgust when I outshoot them. :p
