Benson X
.270 WIN
I wanted a better recoil pad for my MVP .308 (Scout). The stock butt pad felt like shooting 2x4 after putting 50+ rounds down range. On more than one occasion, I'd end up with broken blood vessels and bruising on my shoulder, days after shooting.
I researched, and tried to find a suitable replacement. I found this old thread: http://www.mossbergmvp.com/index.php?threads/recoil-pad.1446/
After spending a great deal of time on Limbsaver's site, printing/comparing templates and sketching dimensions - I decided the "best" fit would have to be the "Universal Grind-to-Fit, Small" (model # 10541) option that would best fit the MVP.
After receiving the LS#10541, I immediately did a dry-fit and was surprised how badly it mated-up to the MVP stock. It would require TONS of grinding/sanding and slotting of the screw holes to get it to fit.
Here is the initial fit-up of the Small Grind-to-Fit (#10541)
I REALLY did not want to spend hours grinding plastic and rubber, nor do I have the time right now to invest in such an undertaking, so I went back to the drawing board (literally).
After pulling up Limbsaver's Template Guide on the computer, I made sure the Zoom level on the screen matched a 8.5"x11" piece of paper (so I didn't have to print each page), then I took my Post-It note sketch of the MVP stock and stuck it right on the computer monitor. This allowed me to easily compare my sketch with Limbsaver's template(s) and find a more suitable option.
I found that the Remington/Winchester models were a VERY close match, within a few 16ths of an inch. These options came in either the Classic (10112/10121) or their newer AirTech version (10808). I opted to try out the 10808 Model, as it was slightly cheaper and I like the idea of the separate compression chambers to isolate and distribute more of the recoil.
After receiving, and doing the initial fit-up - I was more than pleased to see how nicely it mated with the MVP, and the screw holes themselves required no slotting (I had to re-use the same screws from the Mossberg pad). Of course, there were slight differences - but it was so minimal and since the Limbsaver covered the opening entirely, I will likely not have to modify it at all to function properly.
I may add a small adapter plate in the future to flush out the edges, but I'll test it out as-is this weekend to see if that will be necessary.
Here are the pics after I added the Model #10808 (again, I didn't do anything other than screw it on).
