Slugs and Sabots in Smooth Bore or Rifled Bore

Sabots can serve two very different purposes. One purpose is to hold (center) a smaller projectile in a large bore. In this case you get a higher velocity by using a lighter than normal projectile. This still happens today when companies offer pistol size projectiles in shotguns shells. It is also seen in the old Accelerator (sp?) that used .22 cal bullets in 30/06 and .308

In other cases, the new Polymer sabots just engage the rifling far better than lead. The rifling will cut lead away from the bullet (as we all see when using lead reloads in rifles and pistols). The polymers have less friction and actually grip the lands and grooves to bring the projectile up to the rotational speeds indicated by the barrel twist rate.

That's what I like about Box O'Truth...very straightforward and practical information...with pictures to back it up.
