Video: Detailed Review of 590A1

Water Monkey,
Thanks for the video. I should be receiving my 590A1 Mariner this week. I'm swapping/adding stocks, forend, sights, heat shield, and side saddle. Your video not only showed me how to maintain the weapon, but answered my first 50 questions on how to make these changes.

Regards

Awesome glad it helped!

sorry if this post is in the wrong section, but i couldn't figure out how to start my own feed. so, i just got a 590a1 and i love it! its the 2nd gun i've purchased after my ruger 10/22. i put a trigger kit on my 10/22 lowering the pull to 2.5-3 lbs. i was wondering if there was anything i could do to my 590a1 to lighten up the stiff trigger!

Hello Mangoat and welcome aboard. I too have a 10/22 and a 590A1. I'm partial to both.

To start a new thread, select a topic such as "Mossberg 590 Pump Action" scroll to the bottom of the list of threads and on the left is a spot to select "new topic" Click on it, type in what you want and include a topic title.

Sorry I can't help with the trigger pull on the 590A1 but I'm sure someone will be along that can direct you.

Water Monkey, thank you for the detailed instructional video. I just picked up a 590A1 18.5 w/GRS. I do have a question regarding cleaning/maintaining of the exterior of the receiver, barrel and mag tube. I read that applying CLP or oil to those areas help clean and maintain the parkerized finish. Is that something recommended or do you have other methods of cleaning fingerprints and smudges on the exterior. Many Thanks!

CLP works just fine on the exterior surface of mine.

I use a little bit on a soft toothbrush for anything that requires any scrubbing. The wife always gets a little angry though 'cause apparently it doesn't taste very good... :D

Great video. Wish I would have saw it before I took her apart the first time.

Thanks for taking the time put this out there.

Hey D,

sorry been busy with work and didnt notice your post on MO.

Basically the parkerized finish can really take a beating. And fingerprints and smudges wont really hurt it in the long run.

But to answer your question Hoppes has a cloth that has some oil embedded in it. Hang on let me see the name.....Silicone Cloth. I rub down the outer surface after a detailed cleaning every 500 rounds or so.

Hope this helps and happy shooting!

My best,

Water Monkey

PS

I tried to reply to you on Youtube but you have locked incoming PM's

Thank you Lazy Eyed Sniper and Water Monkey!! I'll fix my Youtube acct. Your responses are very helpful and I feel more comfortable going about cleaning it now.

Many thanks and all the best!

Water Monkey, i've been using your video as a "noob tool" since i got my 590a1 in august and its just been an incredibly valuable asset! today i was shooting and practicing combat loading and rapid firing and the strangest thing happened! i would fire a round out of the chamber, but when i racked the slide and tried to fire again.....i got nothing but a click! I vaguely remembered you talking about a problem you had with your 590 when you first got it, so i went to my fall back position and watched your video for like the 20th time! it was like you were speaking just to me. same f***ing problem you had!!!! cartridge stop is bent wrong and rubbing on the slide rail. but now i know what the problem is and how to fix it! i am eternally greatful to you! you've saved me time, hassle, and gun smithing fees! thank you sooo much brother!

as long as i am here, i have a speedfeed stock on my 590a1 and i'm trying to put a single point sling mount plate from GG&G on it as well. problem, the bolt that runs through the stock and into the back of the receiver isn't long enough to go through the mounting plate as well. i couldn't find a longer bolt at the local hardware store to replace the stock one. it only needs to be like 1/4" longer to make up for the thickness of the plate. i did buy a 5/16 threaded rod and i'm trying to rig it to fit. any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hey ManGoat,

First, I really appreciate your support on my video and I'm glad it was able to help you out in any way!

Second, It saddens me that you also had a similar issue with your shotgun because that means it may be an ongoing QC issue with the 590A1 series. The good thing is its a quick fix however many new gun owners may not be quite as knowledgable on how the shotgun works to fix it.

Third, unfortunately I can not help you on the GG&G sling adapter as I dont have any experience on it. The 590A1 is my HD shotgun so I dont put a sling on it. However I was thinking about putting the adapter on down the road so this does bump my concern up.

I wouldnt think that the particular stock should effect how the bolt sets in the receiver. How about taking out the washer? Perhaps that would add a little bit of length.

I too had problems when I added a receiver end plate sling adapter.

I used the ERGO ambi sling plate, also about 1/4" thick. I used mine with the Hogue short LOP which uses the factory stock bolt, but still had to do like wise and go to the hardware store for a longer bolt to use the sling plate.

Using the sling plate introduced another issue however. Well, a couple issues, one compounded by the other. You know the lug on the bottom of the receiver that sticks out to mate up with the notch in the stock? When you add the sling plate, this lug thingy becomes useless and no longer mates to the stock at all, which introduces the first problem. Stock twist. I know not everyone experiences the stock twist, but it was a problem for me. The stock would rotate on the bolt axis, so I fgured it simply needed to be tightened. This is where the second problem begins. The receiver of the 590A1 is an aluminum alloy and softer than the steel bolt, so over tightening could result in stripping the threads out of the receiver. (Parenthetically speaking here, Remington has a clear advantage having an all steel receiver).

I never could (safely) tighten my stock bolt so it wouldn't rotate. I would get it very very snug, to the point I felt anymore may very well strip it out. It was tight, but I could still feel the give in the threads and I wasn't willing to risk any more. If it were steel, you could torque it down pretty hard and it would crush plastic in the stock before damaging threads.

While I liked the ERGO plate, I removed it in the long run for the reasons listed above. I decided on the Specter Gear sling and stock adapter if I would want a sling on it.
