Got Wood?

I confess that I honestly didn't know that there was a wood called micarta. All this time I thought it was a man-made laminate. Show's I'm always learning good stuph here on MO.com...... :)

I kinda like the salt-and-pepper look of that SKS stock! My teakwood Yugo stock is so pristine I really am now thinking of trying a refinish on it for a different color, thanks to this thread! Course, by the time I get the bleach and everything else I'll probably have way too much invested in the project.

Micarta is man made. The stuff I have is made of cotton linen. It's like plywood.

thanks fellas, it will look very similar to my glenfield model 10 in color. i put a dark grain on that one with light in between. I'm not sure that it helps much but before i put the finish on i'll sand it down all the way with a 600 grit paper to make it shiny smooth that way most of the color goes to the grain of the wood. if i stopped at a 220 grit and then stained it would come out a much darker color in between the grains. my main issue for having to darken the color was there is a couple cracks in the stock that i didn't see when i bought it. I guess it's a win some loose some thing. you don't notice the cracks with the darker stain but when the lighter stain was on there they screamed. And the cracks shouldn't affect the functionality. It may eventually need a new stock so i will be on the hunt for one. I really like the wood look on sks's and wont be changing it over to plastic.

The bleach was a little over 40 bucks shipped to my door. and would be plenty to do about 4-6 full sized wood stock guns. maybe 8-10 ak-47's depending on how much you use. It's really neat to use just for the fact if you want to use any of the colored wood stains like blue or pink or green stuff like that you really need a good light colored wood to start with. I did several guns when i lived in alaska different colors. I'm ready to get this one done and take it out to shoot.

Here's a little tip on filling cracks.
Use the sawdust from the wood you are sanding (once the stain or paint removed and it's down to the raw wood) mixed with a stainable glue and make it a putty. Then fill the crack. It will be the same color as the wood you used.
Also...if it's a deep crack and seems to be getting bigger use super glue first then the method above. The superglue will keep the crack from getting bigger.

I did a **** on the ***** and it looks great. I didnt get out of my OSHA 10 class in time to ship the vertec and the **** but I'm going to have the wife ship em. They're coming. Todays wednesday so they'll be in your hands by early next week.

hey nitesite i saw this picture and thought it was a pretty neat color. I thought about going this color route but maybe on the next one... and i'm sure there will be more! If you decided you didn't want to take the time to do it you could ship the wood only to me and i could do it in my spare time for you for free. wouldn't take but maybe a couple of weeks! maybe shorter if all the cosmoline is out of the wood already. i usually put a polyureathane on the ones i do but i could do a tung oil or whatever you wanted.

(edit This is just a picture off of the internet, not one i actually did)

Dude, your're hilarious!

...and I can't wait!!!

The unlimited Depth of Field in that photograph is phenominal, and is likely lost on some folks.
Awesome.

Who would have imagined that it was taken with a Canon PowerShot point and shoot camera @ f/8

Of course, the wide angle lens helped considerably. But Damn.

Damn... What a great capture!

Here is a little sneak preview of how my stock turned out. in the but of the stock you can see a hand shape... that is my hand in the high gloss. it's still hanging up in the garage but it's going to come down and get shot this weekend. if it's a good shooter then i'll get the metal re done. if it shoots like junk i'll leave it the way it is. i'll post a picture later tonight of everything put back on it. pending i can find a nail or something to work as the handguard pin i had to drill out.

Personally I'm hoping that it shoots good enough for you that you will put more time into it. Because it looks full of character. And...that...I love.

Very well said!!! I totally agree! So many gogeous firearms and not nearly enough time to drool and talk about them all! ;)

I can no longer fiddle with them.....

The grips have shipped.

I've included a little something from Hawaii that my brother got when he visited.
For the finish of the Vertec I used wax. Nice n shiny. I tried using the tung oil but the grain was so tight it didn't want to soak any of it up. So I stripped off and tried the hand rubbed wax method. Much better lookin. There's some great looking lines of greyish white in there as well. I cut up a block into a bunch of strips looking for the pattern that would give me the grey I wanted. I really hope it fits. The backsides I left the tung oil on. To much of a pita to get that off there. But nobody's going to see that side so....I hope you like them.
I'm making a couple more sets of Vertec grips just because I can't just make one! So I have some stuff to work with that came in the mail this week. When I get done with em I'll post it up then.

Cheers Shane! They'll be there Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

please fit...please fit...please fit.

SCHWEET!!!

Dude, I really can't wait to get em installed on the Vertec and I'll post up pics as soon as I can. With your expertise and attention to detail, I'm sure they'll fit just fine. It's a good thing you're makin a couple more sets, 'cause I know there'll be a TON of "WTF?!, Where can I get those?" questions once I post them up on the Beretta forum...

Man, I can't thank you enough for taking on this project!

OK folks,

The ebony Beretta 92 Vertec grips made by our very own ripjack13 arrived yesterday. I had a chance to snap some pics a little while ago. I could waste time talking about how amazing these grips are but like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words...

All I can add to the photos is that they are amazing and my camera really doesn't do justice to the beautiful grain. These presentation grade grips transformed my Vertec into a work of art. rip, I really can't thank you enough for all the time and effort you put into making these for me. I haven't had a chance to take pics of the Hawaiian Koa wood 1911 grips you made me yet, but I'll post them up once I get them mounted...

You are one SERIOUSLY talented man!!!
