Question Of The Month. (March 2020) (Virus Thread)

It gets crazier by day. Yesterday the local news talked to an "expert" about the mental health aspects that the negative news about the virus was having on people. Then for the next 20 minutes, including the sports, they had nothing but stories about the virus.

I'm not a prepper due to mostly a lack of space, but we do try to keep a good supply of essentials on hand. I think we can probably go a month on what we have on hand. That being said, if the water and electricity were to fail that would change everything.

Even though we are spread out we are in this together. We have a lot of ideas and good folks to share our concerns and experiences.

This too shall pass.

Hell yes! This is still America.

Our county is the size of Massachusetts, but so far only a couple known cases have shown.
But local schools are all closing. The one where my daughter teaches has internet service and a Chromebook for every student.

OK, friends. I'm making the call on covid-19 RIGHT NOW!

:bs:

The whole worldwide infection is less than the population of my county, about 150,000. The dead at this time, less than 6,000.
And we are quarantining the WHOLE DAMN PLANET? Trillions of bux lost in financial concerns?
Are church greeters going to be demanding "Show me your Health Clearance Papers!"?

:omg:

Over reaction? I think so.

I could be wrong. Convince me.

Follow the money. The states with Democrat governors are all piling on the close everything. They want the goodies from the government. When the president asked for 2.5 billion dollars and Schummer and Pelosi offered 8.3 billion the fix was on.

Then when he made 50 billion more available the dominoes started falling.

Scoop, I think you are spot on. Everyone has gone into panic mode, led by the media at the behest of the Democrats.

Cadd, this may lead to the way school is taught going forward.

We have 4 cases in Oklahoma and the hoarding and closures have started in earnest.

Boom and Bust is the #1 Pattern of all Human Endeavors.
From Adam to Cheops to Trump, this hasn't changed.

When the corona biz fizzles in 30 days, the market will boom again.
And it will rocket up, from pent-up spending pressure. Record spending will occur.

Once the rise starts, everyone sees their chance of profits, and rushes to buy. . .ka- BOOM!

The stock market is clearly the TP market inverted. I feel future market trends can be modeled on downward TP movements.
By Easter the market will be booming but hall closets will still be oversupplied nationwide.

And TP sales will be in the toilet.

We can only imagine what it would be like if this was a real emergency! Can you imagine the chaos and panic?

People are buying things not because they really need them but to deprive others of goods. Simple Greed!

No one needs a shopping cart full of toilet paper, 20 bottles of hand sanitizer or 10 gallons of bleach.

Our biggest problem is the national media and their 24/7 rant about all things evil (in their mind).

Shut down the national media for 30 days and the vast majority of our problems would go away!!!!!!!!

Regards

Do I think it is a serious threat? Yes.

Do I think it is any more serious than the flu or pneumonia or any other illness? Not really.

Do I think the media is intentionally scaring the hell out of people because it is an election year? Yes to infinity!!!!! Everything else they have tried to use against Trump has failed, fortunately for them this new crisis has come to light that will allow them to crush the economy and strike terror into the minds of the sheeple.

Anyone with a brain who is actually listening to the accounts of people who have had it and the reports coming from real doctors would be a little more conscious about things but not worked up into a frernzy that we have entered the end of days.

When I walk into Meijer, Walmart or any other store and see empty shelves and signs limiting quantities of food people can buy, all I can think of is this is a preview to life under any of the "democratic" socialists.

I have not been able to find a store anywhere that caries TP, hand sanitizer or anti bacterial soap. Ironically I was able to find an over abundance of the larger antibacterial refills. People are stupid in their panic buying

Now canned goods are flying off the shelves.

It pissed me off to no end that I am forced to buy Kleenex to wipe my *** because idiots are hoarding TP. I wouldn't even be buying that but wife is freaking out that we will run out of TP.

I think shutting things down is probably a good thing just to contain it. If it ensures a second term for The Donald, then I'm on board. The countries that have done this from the start have much less people affected. Where I draw the line is when the governors start talking about marshal law, etc. That my brothers is too far at this stage.

Overall with schools out and no sporting events my drive to and from work is a dream. LOL

Mike, I hear that the book stores still have plenty cases of "toilet paper" authored by Hillary, Obama, Gore, and Comey. Just need to wad the pages up a couple of times to soften it up before using. Probably cheaper than toilet paper in grocery stores (if they had any) and appropriate use.

Never knew we had so many "assholes" in the country. Must be true because they sure need a lot of toliet paper!

Amen to that. It's all about ratings for them.

Just for shits and giggles I hit up amazon, and ebay looking at mountain house, and MRE'S. 2-400 % markup for stuff I bought a few months ago.

Guess it's a good thing I have a woods full of squirrels.

Our schools have closed for the next 2 weeks, other than they sent their next 2 weeks assignments home for me to help him with.

My wife was told that she could work from home indefinitely, so she's at Walmart now buying materials that she'll need like a 2nd computer monitor and headphones and stuff so she can have calls directed through a vpn. I'm going to try to use that on our taxes this year since it it work related.

But since she does support for school and lunch room payments all around the country, I question how many calls she's going to be taking so I don't know exactly how that's going to work out.

Either this is the biggest hoax since War of the Worlds, or this is one bad flu bug. Surely the politicians wouldn't tank the whole country just to try to get rid of trump would they?

Nevermind, I shouldn't have even asked that I suppose.

I voiced something similar to my wife earlier today. And, as I think about it, the tinfoil hat gains a couple more layers.

Keeping my Mom in and settled is going to be the hardest part for me. She has continued treatment and her immune system is constantly virtually non-existent to the point she has to take nuepegen (sp?) shots regularly so, myself, my sister and even my uncle has told her that we'd get whatever she wanted or needed from the store for the time being.

I worry about later when/if the hospital starts filling up with sick people because there is no where else for her to take her infusions and lab work several times a week and she'll be in physical contact with everything at ground zero so I'm not going to lie, worries me extremely.

I hope all goes well for your mom, John. We all may be a little too callous about the elderly and infirm being impacted by CV and I apologize if I have come across as such...

Everyone has a right to their opinions. I haven't read anything you've said that I thought was directed at anyone in specific. This isn't the first time that my Mom has been around infectious diseases. For that matter, she was the head nurse at our local clinic for several years in the 80's having worked her way up in OB/GYN delivering babies and such for about a decade before that. And after that, she went to work for the state health department. So, she has a lot more intimate knowledge about how virus' and things works than the average person her age.

Still doesn't stop me from worrying about her though. I spoke to the administrator assistant and voiced my concerns about the placement of the infusion lab for everyone who is in a similar position getting chemo and such. There are several places besides the 3rd floor of the hospital that have less traffic and less contact than where it is currently located. But that is a subject for another time I suppose. Only thing they'd have to do is move the nurses desk and computer and their reclining chairs that the patients use. With as much money as that department makes in a year, they could probably build a whole new wing for it. But like I said, that's probably a subject for another time.

I am worried for my mom and mother in law. They are both at the age where something like this could easily turn fatal. Even a simple cold or flu can easily turn to pneumonia and be life threatening.

I think if we actually tracked the flu with the same intensity, people would be just as freaked out. We tend to just accept it but the reality is that around 70,000 Americans die from it each year.....each year!!! And it would be much worse if we didn't have shots for the common strains that we do.

We need to keep things in perspective.

I just don't think that a good perspective from the media will occur as long as they can find some way to spin every Cosmic event as the fault of our president and his associates and the people who voted for him and anybody else they can point the finger at to make themselves feel morally Superior.

PA just closed all non essential businesses. Restaurants can sell take out food delivered to the curb and 6 packs to go only. Restaurants requested the state to be able to provide 6 packs at the curb too but were denied so patrons must park and enter for pick up. I can't stand stupid bureaucrats. Which brings me to the state has a monopoly on liquor sales. Hard to believe that still goes on isn't it? They are shutting them down tonight. Good thing I am a homebrewer. That reminds me an old homebrewing ad...in the event of a national disaster you will be more popular than the guy that collected stamps.

Does anyone else feel like they are working toward marshal law step by step instead of just imposing it?

Little late to the party here but we have a good stock of emergency supplies set aside for earthquake (west coast).

I read the signs early on this and got out and picked up some extra dry and canned goods almost a month ago now. We’re fine. Like others here, my biggest concern is my 83 year old Dad.

As some have already said I’m not unconvinced either that this isn’t a biological weapon but I’ll leave that to the experts if we ever really know the truth.

I would say that I think “someone” is responsible and I don’t believe this was a natural occurrence.

As for the panic...geez people are unbelievable. And watching all the unprepared, self-centred douchebags push each other around for supplies, we’ll lets just say I’m glad I’m armed.

Cuz, if it gets worse it’s 9 meals to anarchy right???

Edit for clarity...I has the dumb sometimes.

Also, about the origin of the virus...I can’t remember where I saw the article but I recently read a “scientific” position purporting to “debunk” the biological weapon origin theory or conspiracy theory to be accurate. I’ve skimmed a few others as well.

But anyway, they went on to describe how the new coronavirus is a wholly natural mutation of a virus. They also went on to say that those who purport that the virus is a SARS/HIV mash-up are barking up the wrong tree. Primarily, IIRC that the one or more of the constituent parts (forgive my lack of biological/scientific terminology here) of HIV can be found in a number of known viruses. I cannot corroborate this as I’m not an expert and to my memory they offered no hard corroboration either. Being a natural skeptic of human honesty I don’t subscribe to a lot of things said or purported to be without some compelling evidence.

So, my question remains if it’s “not likely” to be man-made or “not unusual” to find parts of HIV mashed up with other viruses or where they share some common strands of genetic likeness, then where is the evidence pointing to someone “not engineering” such a thing? We know they do. It’s called biological warfare.

My gut tells me it’s more than a coincidence and of course time will tell. But apparently this virus seems able to avoid the detection of the human immune system, exactly what HIV does...suppresses the immune system making the host vulnerable to attack from other organisms. Coincidence? I dunno. Someone needs to start convincing me otherwise. Was it intentionally released? That’s a whole other question.

Simple logic (which may not apply here) would say that if it’s got a HIV constituent(s) that may make it hard to treat...because so is HIV. It takes a diet of drug cocktails to bring HIV to heel. So I’m wondering if a simple one shot, vaccine is going to be effective in eradicating this virus from the body?

Just my thoughts.....
