Question Of The Month. (August 2013)

^ Indeed!

I have three little ones that threaten to start eating the guns and ammo if I don't feed them enough, and college is looming on the horizon.

I say that in jest Ripjack, I'm getting my bride into the shooting sports slowly but surely - she has nearly laid claim to my M&P22 pistol!

My choices would be my Springfield XDs 45 and my mossberg mavrick 88, both with enough power to take game or stop attackers.

Since I only own 2, it'll be the 590 and M44 Mosin. Reach out and touch someone or something with the m44, use it as a hammer with that steel butt plate, stabbing with the swing out bayonet or roast marshmallows on it. The 590 for up close hunting and personal protection. If I were to have a pistol to choose from, I'd go right back to simplicity and get a .357 revolver. I put about 800 rounds through my dad's and was a fairly good shot with it.

I love my Mosin 91/30! If I can find a m44 locally at good price....and my bills are paid....I'll be a happy camper. :)

I had made my quick choice earlier in this post, however I just got done cleaning the 930T and while putting it away scanned the "sacred closet" w/locker. 2 guns only? How 'bout we make it 2 trucks. Then I can take at least some other things, plus I wouldn't "waste" the stack(s) of 7.62x39, .45, 9mm, 12ga, .357, .280. I won't put a number down, DHS would likely want to buy it.

To explain that, I buy a little here a little there. Walmart food shopping, visit the sporting goods counter last, check out there if you have no produce. Pick up 1 box of some slug, buck or Win. PDX, or some "white box" whatever for practice. Some stuff I got ten years ago when prices were....you know. It hurt the budget a little from time to time, but I'm glad now.

Also, very important! I realized I after I had recently acquired more mags that stuff was starting to "clutter". Just received another 4 mag pouch from Midway, however my range bag is also full. I think need to figure out more mobile "containers" for a few other things. If you gotta go in a hurry, no matter your choices, you gotta carry it. Beyond paper or plastic, is your important stuff (and it's stuff) ready to go?

My two I would take would be my 590 for versatility and variety of shots allowed from slug to bird shot, and my AR for the added down range punch and precision.

One would definently have to be my mossy 500 tactical and the other would be a tie between my psa m4 or my 9mm xdm. Guess I would just have to make that call when stuff really hit the fan!

I've been thinking about this. I would take my AR with .223/5.56 and 22lr bolts and my 870 (only because I don't have a 500 in 12G)

If the AR with two bolts counts as 2 guns than I will fall back on the Ruger 10/22. While I hate to give up the firepower of the 223/556 the .22 can be an effective round for both defense and hunting. Not to mention that you can carry a lot of ammo.

The 870 is both a defensive gun as well as a good choice for hunting and putting food on the fire.

I really wanted to work my G19 into the mix but it is more limited in it's roll and I want multitaskers in the arsenal.

My Daewoo DP-51 and my Stevenson 16g side by side with full choke on both barrels. Carry for the DP-51 and home defense for the Stevenson

I don't own a centrefire rifle.

I have three 12 guage shotguns. A Maverick 88, Magtech CBC and an Akkar Stinger 14" barrel.

I have a 20 guage Hatsan semi auto.

Two Glock 17's and a Glock 21. Three Norinco pistols a 9mm, a .22lr and a .45acp.

Two .22 carbines. A Norinco take down (Browning copy) and a Magtech CBC (Mossberg 702).

It's a hard choice to pick just two ?????

I would go with the Maverick 88 for it's reliability, commonly available ammo and versatility for defence and hunting food.

Secondly for defence one of the Glock 17's for it's reliability and common availability of ammunition.

If I could choose a third it would be the Norinco .22 rifle. It breaks down into two easily carried and stored pieces. It is semi automatic, super accurate and with it's sound moderator very quiet too.

Good thought out answers fellas. Picking just 2 is making you think about it.

Scenario: Stock market has collapsed, 80-90% of wealth is lost. Hyper inflation starts to set in. Big cities are becoming chaos with looting and murder at all time highs. Gas, is $50.00 a gallon if you can find it. Loaf of bread is going for $25.00, all food has increased 250 to 500%. You decide that its time to head for the country before you become a statistic of the great Obumer depression. Its only you, you sent your wife and kids off to the country last week.
Felt like I was reading the intro to a suspense thriller or script for T.V. mini-series pilot.
Wow. Scary close to reality.
Reading this post has been deeply troubling and sobering the more I think about it.
Thinking along the lines of Stag 1, I'd have to look at where I live and what options I have available outside of the home.
I live in Las Vegas. Depending on the month of the year the temperature fluctuates wildly. Late Dec-Jan are the coldest with day/night temps 40's/30's and the summer temps are regularly in the low 100's. Last year we had over 60 days of 100+ temps.
First priority; water. This city has a bazillion fountains and water effects at all the various casinos. Possible sources of water in a SHTF case described. It is heavily chlorinated and probably contains algae inhibitors, too. :(
To the West we have the Spring mountains with Mt Charleston being the highest peak in Southern Nevada at 11, 916 ft and Red Rock National Park further South, both of which have natural springs and some deer. Temps about 10-20 degrees cooler. I would prefer this to Lake Las Vegas which is closer to the city and because of the lower elevation, much hotter.
The 2010 population of the Las Vegas metropolitan area was 1,951,269. Imagine those numbers concentrated in just 600 sq mi.
If I could only pick two guns to take as I dash out the door, It would be my Remington 700 BDL in .243 Win and my Springfield Armory XD45 for hunting in the mountains and to avoid being hunted in the city. ;)

Dorangolv I'm glad you put some thought into your situation and the guns that you would take. To me this has been the best of the QOM series.

It should make us all think. . I do not presume to speak for Oli but I think that's all he is doing. I did not read it that he disagreed with you (Stag1) but merely pointed out the likely result of someone planning to escape a city "and head for the hills". Many in cities would perish in the early days of a meltdown as the cities imploded on themselves and food ran out. Those lucky enough to escape a city and it urban surroundings will find themselves trapped between a smoldering city run by violent gangs and rural folks that don't want them or the problems they are bringing with them.

For the diabolical Ripjack, maybe SHTF prep would be a good QOM.

Edit: the post preceding this one was removed.

I'd actually really look forward to that one. I'd take a lot of notes from people who are way ahead of me in that department. At this point I have nothing. Never talked about it with the wife but I will when she gets back into town tonight.
This has been a great QOM because it did what all good questions do, it forces you to look at what you have available. And creates a sense of urgency to make the needed changes based on all the new information coming from the other reply's.

Right on bro....They might not all be as good or controversial as this one. :p
But...hopefully in the rest of em we can all accept each others answers as what they are. Opinions.
and we all know the old saying about them.... ;)

Carry on.....
